The current approach to addressing this issue is too lenient. In cases of speeding violations, two-wheelers are temporarily assigned “WOK” status. The abbreviation stands for “Waiting for Inspection.” As a result, the registration certificate is invalid until it is determined that the moped or motorized bicycle once again meets the required standards. The cost of the inspection is borne by the owner of the two-wheeler.

Is the moped or light moped with WOK status insured?

The license plate is temporarily invalid. This means the vehicle is not insured. The driver may even face criminal charges if they drive the vehicle anyway. The insurer will only provide coverage again once this status has been removed. If an accident is caused while the vehicle does not have valid moped or scooter insurance, the consequences can be severe. The insurer of the motor vehicle may even seek compensation for any damages from the insured. In the event of an accident resulting in injury or death, the costs of damages can be very high.

What is the danger posed by modified mopeds and motorized bicycles?

The problem occurs mainly in urban areas. Heavy traffic combined with two-wheeled vehicles traveling too fast poses a danger. The danger is further exacerbated by the fact that they also ride on the bike path. This puts cyclists at risk, and motorists are not prepared for such fast vehicles to come out of the bike path.

Such a mandatory inspection is one of the options for combating this nuisance. The PvdA advocates criminal prosecution of the companies that modify these vehicles. It will only be a matter of time before measures are taken to address the current unsafe conditions.
