Vintage car valuation
Your vintage car is a precious possession. You shouldn't think about your classic car being damaged or stolen. If this does happen, you want to be well insured. But what exactly do you get paid in case of damage or theft? This is where an appraisal report can help. The valuation report establishes the value of your vintage car. Therefore, the valuation of an old-timer contributes to a quick claim settlement. An appraisal report can also be important when taking out vintage car insurance. Please note that insurance at appraised value is not possible with a standard third-party coverage.
What does a vintage car appraiser look at?
An appraisal is not the same as a technical inspection. It is intended to determine the value of your vintage car. During the appraisal, an appraiser looks at various aspects of the vintage car. These include the make, type, model and year of construction of the classic car. It also looks at the condition of the classic car, any damage and investments that increase the value. The outcome of the appraisal is included in the valuation report. A good oldtimer appraiser will value your oldtimer in accordance with article 7:960 of the Civil Code.

What does the valuation of a vintage car cost?
The cost of a vintage car appraisal depends on a number of factors, but generally the price is between €150 and €200. Of course, the exact price varies from one appraiser to another. There are also companies that offer it cheaper, but it is important that you have the appraisal done by a licensed appraiser. Not only for your own peace of mind, but also for your vintage car insurance. The appraisal report must be done properly by a licensed appraiser, or you run the risk that the insurance company will not accept it.
Oldtimer appraisal report
After the appraisal, all data are recorded in an appraisal report. The valuation report serves to establish the value of your vintage car. This includes the make, type and model of your oldtimer. In addition, it says something about the quality and condition of the oldtimer.
An appraisal report usually has a validity period of 24 to 36 months, depending on the insurer. During this period, the value of your vintage car is fixed in the appraisal report. In case of damage you can therefore fall back on the established value, so there will be no discussion with the insurer about the amount to be paid. Have you made improvements to the vehicle in the meantime? Then it is wise to have the appraiser reassess the report in the meantime.
Overview of vintage car appraisers in the Netherlands
It is important to have your vintage car appraised by a licensed appraiser. Someone may call himself a recognized vintage car appraiser if he is certified and meets the criteria established by the VRT and TMV. A recognized appraiser must have at least 5 years of demonstrable experience in the field of valuation.

NOTE: Some appraisers are excluded
Some appraisers are excluded because they provide "excessive" appraisals. In other words, they set too high a value for the vehicle. Therefore, always ask in advance if a report from a particular appraiser will be accepted by your insurance company.
Organizations and regulations
Getting your vintage car appraised involves not only the appraiser, but also the rules and agencies that ensure the report is reliable and usable by insurers. To avoid discussions and disappointments in the event of a claim, it is important to know which organizations are involved and which legal framework applies.
Organizations
NIVRE
The Netherlands Institute of Chartered Surveyors monitors the quality and professionalism of chartered surveyors and appraisers. Continuing education keeps their knowledge and skills current.
VRT
The United Register of Appraisers (VRT) Foundation organizes workshops and seminars to promote and maintain the professional competence and integrity of appraisers.
TMV
The Federation of Appraisers, Brokers and Auctioneers (TMV) engages in various forms of valuation and mediation of moveable property, including art, antiques and motor vehicles.
FEHAC
The Federation of Historic Automobile and Motorcycle Clubs (FEHAC) represents the interests of owners of historic vehicles 25 years and older. Through the more than 200 member clubs, they represent approximately 70,000 enthusiasts and contribute to the preservation of mobile heritage in the Netherlands.
Legal framework
The legal foundation for vintage car appraisals is established in the Civil Code. This framework determines what value will be paid out in the event of damage or total loss, provided the appraisal has been properly performed.
Article 7:960 BW (current).
Since January 1, 2006, this article has been the successor to Article 275 of the Wvk. The essence of this is that only an expert appraisal report carried out in advance provides certainty that the established value will actually be paid out by the insurer in the event of total loss or damage. This provides clearer protection for the old-timer owner, whereas in practice the period of validity is usually limited by insurers to 24-36 months.
Article 275 Wvk (old)
This article stated that the value of a vehicle had to be determined by an independent expert. According to the law, such an appraisal report had an unlimited period of validity. For a long time, this article provided guidance for owners of vintage cars, but was eventually considered too broad and outdated.
