Using quad bikes as agricultural vehicles
In the Netherlands, it is not just allowed to use a motor vehicle as an agricultural vehicle. You must be able to prove that you are a farmer, agrarian or herdsman. For example, a quad bike as an agricultural vehicle comes in handy when working or controlling large tracts of land. That is why the quad is popular among large landowners, farmers and foresters. In addition, in recent years, many applications and additional accessories have been developed to maximize the quad for agricultural use.
Does an agricultural quad have a registration number?
Whether a quad needs a license plate depends on the type of quad you have. A quad approved as a three-wheeled motor vehicle or as a passenger car must have a license plate. A quad approved as an agricultural or farm tractor does not need a license plate.
Note: Since January 1, 2021, new rules apply for driving on public roads with an (agricultural) construction tractor. There is now a registration requirement for agricultural vehicles. How can I insure an agricultural quad?
If you want to drive your farm quad on public roads, you will have to insure it. As mentioned, not all insurers want to insure a quad that serves as an agricultural vehicle. What are the rules for a quad as an agricultural vehicle?
The owner must be at least 16 years old and have a T driver's license. The speed limit on public roads is 25 km/h for an agricultural quad. The quad does not need a license plate and you do not have to wear a helmet. If you want to use a quad bike as an agricultural vehicle, you must be able to prove that you are a farmer or agriculturist. If you drive longer than 10 km on public roads, it is sometimes already difficult to prove that you are a farmer. There is no RDW inspection for use as an agricultural vehicle.
