All about scooter suspension

Suspending a scooter means temporarily stopping the registration with the RDW. During the suspension you temporarily do not have to meet the usual obligations, such as road tax and insurance. During the suspension period, the scooter may not be parked or driven on public roads.

This is ideal if you won't be using the scooter for a while, such as during the winter, an extended stay abroad or long-term storage. As soon as you lift the suspension, you can get back on the road as usual.

How long can you suspend a scooter?

You suspend a scooter for 1, 2 or 3 years. The minimum suspension period is 1 year. If you end the suspension within 1 month, you will still have to pay motor vehicle tax for the suspension period via an additional levy from the tax authorities. If you suspend the scooter for 1 year, but end the suspension period earlier, you will not get a refund.

Scooter temporary suspension: what about insurance?

If your scooter is suspended, you no longer have to comply with the third-party insurance obligation. However, you have to cancel the scooter insurance yourself. This can be done very easily through the insurer or intermediary.

Does your insurance run through Alpina? On Alpina.nl you can make a change 24/7. If you no longer meet the third-party insurance obligation, without the license plate being suspended, you will receive a fine from the RDW.

Scooter suspension extension

Does the suspension expire and you want to renew it? Then you can extend it again by 1, 2 or 3 years. This can be done from up to 6 weeks before the end date of the suspension. The expiration date then simply remains the same as the end date of the old suspension, but the chosen number of years in the future.

If you renew the suspension before the 6 weeks, you do not keep the old expiration date. The date you extend the suspension is then the new expiration date after 1, 2 or 3 years. 1 month before the suspension expires, you will receive a reminder letter from the RDW. You may suspend a scooter as many times as you want.

Suspension scooter lifted

If you want to use the scooter again before the suspension period ends, you can lift the suspension. When you lift the suspension, it is terminated immediately. So this cannot be done for a date in the future.

If you end the suspension before the suspension period expires, you won't get a refund. However, lifting the suspension is free of charge. You can lift the suspension both online and at the counter.

Scooter suspension in winter

Are you a real fair-weather rider? Unfortunately, you cannot suspend your scooter for 1 season. The minimum suspension period is 1 year. Of course you can end the suspension period as soon as the weather improves. The money you have overpaid will not be refunded, however.

Suspending a scooter costs €13.40 per year. Suppose you pay about €6 per month for your scooter insurance. If you suspend the scooter from November to March, you won't have to pay any premium for 5 months. However, for such a short period it doesn't really pay to suspend.

How does suspending a scooter work?

You can suspend your scooter in several ways. The easiest and fastest way is to arrange it online. You can also choose to arrange the suspension through the counter. To do this, go to a license plate counter, RDW counter or RDW inspection station.

Scooter online suspension

You can suspend a scooter online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Go to "Request suspension or renewal. Then log in with your DigiD. You will then enter the RDW service.
  2. Select the license plate number of the vehicle you want to suspend
  3. Select how long you want to suspend the vehicle
  4. Pay the cost of the suspension via iDeal
  5. You will then receive email confirmation of the application

The license plate is suspended as soon as you receive a second e-mail from the RDW. This e-mail also contains the end date of the suspension and is also proof of your suspension. It is therefore important that you keep it in a safe place

A suspended scooter may not be parked in a public place, so it must always be parked on private property, such as in a garage. As long as the scooter is suspended, it may also not be parked in a public garage. You may, however, park it in an enclosed garage. If you park in a public place anyway, you risk a fine.

What paperwork do I need to suspend a scooter?

To suspend a scooter, you need the following documents:

  • registration certificate
  • transfer certificate
  • valid identification document OR the registration card
  • registration code

Do I have to stop my scooter insurance myself?

Yes, if you suspend a scooter you have to stop the scooter insurance yourself. Do not forget this, as it is obviously a waste to pay unnecessary premiums. The scooter must then be off the public roads. Note that if you also suspend the insurance, there is also no coverage against fire or theft.

Can I be fined if I ride a suspended scooter?

Once your scooter's registration has been suspended, you may no longer ride it on public roads. If you do this anyway, you risk a hefty fine of €360.

Can I sell a suspended scooter?

Yes, you can. You don't have to have the suspension up yourself before you sell the scooter. In fact, transferring the scooter to the buyer's name automatically ends the vehicle's suspension.
