Scooter transfer

If you sell a scooter then you must transfer the scooter to the buyer's name. If you don't do this, you remain liable for the obligations that come with having a scooter in your name, such as scooter insurance and any fines. So make sure you get an official indemnification certificate when you sell. After all, this document is the only accepted proof that you are no longer liable for the obligations you have as a license plate holder.

Where can I transfer my scooter?

You can have a scooter transferred to the name of the new owner at a vehicle registration office, such as a PostNL branch, an RDW inspection station, or an RDW counter.

Transferring ownership of a scooter via the vehicle registration office

You can also register a moped at a license plate counter, a PostNL location, an RDW inspection station or an RDW desk. You are then bound to the opening hours of the counter, but in more and more places you can also register on Sundays and evenings.

Scooter online transfer

You can transfer online at any time of the day. For this you need the DigiD app and a phone with a so-called nfc chip reader. Phones with a chip reader are Android smartphones with version 7.0 or higher or an iPhone model 7 or higher and iOS version 13.2. All passports and identity cards now contain a chip. Driving licenses issued after Nov. 14, 2014 also contain a chip. The chip reader allows you to perform a one-time identity check.

You must also have a registration card and the registration code. With a paper registration certificate, online transfer is not possible.

To transfer ownership of your scooter, you will need the following:

  • Valid identification
A valid Dutch passport, Dutch identity card, or Dutch driver's license.
  • Registration certificate
To transfer, you need the original registration certificate and transfer slip or the credit card-sized chain certificate (also known as a registration card).
  • The vehicle registration code
The vehicle registration code consists of 2 parts. The first part of the registration code has 4 digits and is on the registration certificate. The second part of the registration code has 5 digits and is on the registration card, which you receive by mail at home. A paper registration certificate does not include the registration code.

Receipt of release certificate

An employee registers the scooter in the buyer's name, and the buyer receives a registration report. As the seller, you then receive a certificate of indemnification. The certificate of indemnification is proof that the vehicle is no longer registered in the seller's name. From this moment on, the buyer is liable for the obligations associated with owning a scooter.

The buyer is now also required to insure the scooter for at least third-party liability. .. You can now cancel or temporarily suspend your scooter insurance and reactivate it when you have purchased another scooter.

Scooter insurance cancellation

Do you have current scooter insurance with Alpina.nl? You can easily cancel your scooter insurance on our website. easily cancel. Fill in the requested details and state the date of cancellation. This is the date stated on the certificate of indemnification. Once you have submitted the completed form, your scooter insurance will be canceled immediately.

Frequently asked questions about selling a scooter

How does transferring a scooter work?

When selling a scooter, the registration number must be transferred to the buyer's name. This can be done at an RDW-approved registration office or online via DigiD.

After the transfer, you will receive a certificate of indemnification. This document proves that the scooter is no longer registered in your name and that you are no longer responsible for insurance and any fines. Are you the buyer? Then give the certificate of indemnification to the previous owner.

Do I need to insure a scooter immediately after transferring ownership?

Yes, as soon as the scooter is registered in your name, you are legally required to take out at least third-party insurance. This must be arranged immediately after the transfer, because the license plate must be insured at all times.

If you ride without valid scooter insurance, you risk a fine from the CJIB. Therefore, arrange insurance in advance so that it takes effect immediately upon registration.

Can I sell my scooter without a registration certificate?

In principle, you need the registration card (or the old paper registration certificate) to sell your scooter. Without a registration certificate, the scooter cannot be transferred. In addition, the registration certificate must be complete. If the registration code or part of the registration certificate is missing, the scooter cannot be transferred.

If you have lost your vehicle registration certificate, you must first apply for a new registration card from the RDW before you can sell the scooter. You can apply for a vehicle registration certificate urgently if necessary. An urgent application is only possible if you are buying a vehicle, not if you have lost your vehicle registration certificate. If you submit your application before 11:45 a.m., you can pick up the registration certificate the same day. If you submit your application after 11:45 a.m., you can pick up the registration certificate the next day between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Have you lost your registration code? Request a new registration code from the RDW.

Which is better: selling your scooter privately or to a dealer?

Selling a scooter privately usually fetches a higher price, because there is no middleman to make a profit. However, it takes more time and effort.

Selling to an RDW-approved company or dealer is quicker and easier. You will often receive an offer immediately and the transfer will be arranged, but the proceeds are usually lower.
