Lock insurance for scooters
Getting scooter insurance? Pay close attention to which coverage you choose. Because of the high theft rate, it is smart to include theft coverage, especially for scooters with a higher value. With an ART-approved lock you reduce the chance of theft and show that your scooter is well protected. But what exactly does this ART mark mean?
Standard lock not sufficient
In most cases, a scooter or moped is only equipped with a standard lock. But this is often not enough security. This lock still allows thieves to load the scooter onto a trailer, because it is not secured to a post or fence. Therefore, this form of security is generally not enough, especially in large cities.
Insurers and security requirements
Most insurers impose a security requirement with moped insurance or motorcycle insurance, especially with third-party theft or all-risk coverage. Often an ART lock is required. The policy conditions will clearly state which ART class is required, depending on the type of two-wheeler and the situation.
ART-approved lock
Beyond the standard lock, there are numerous options for adding better security to your scooter or moped. For example, you can choose from a bracket, folding, chain or disc brake lock to connect your scooter to a fixed object. These locks may have an ART hallmark to prevent scooter theft. With this hallmark, you can prove that your scooter does indeed have a good lock. Therefore, to reduce the chances of theft, insurance companies want you to have at least a scooter lock with an ART hallmark.
Different levels of security
The ART seal has different levels of security indicated by stars. The more stars a lock receives, the higher its security value is rated.â
ART locks range from 2 to 5 stars:
2 stars:
mostly suitable for bicycles
3 stars:
particularly suitable for mopeds and scooters
4 stars:
suitable for motorcycles and sometimes mandatory for mopeds on the road
5 stars:
Has passed the toughest test and may be required by insurers when a motorcycle is stored at home
What is ART?
ART is a foundation whose goal is to increase the theft prevention level of vehicles and vessels. The foundation was founded by a delegation from the ANWB and the RAI association and does this by testing locks, among other things. The manufacturer of the lock almost always indicates whether it has an ART mark, but you can also check this yourself on the ART Foundation's website.
Proper use of lock combinations
When you purchase a loose ART-approved padlock and a loose ART-approved chain, it is important to look carefully at which lock combinations are allowed. Only the combinations listed on the packaging are approved. A wrong combination could mean that your lock does not count as ART-approved, which means you won't meet your insurer's conditions.
Proof and keys in case of theft
When purchasing a lock with ART certification, it is wise to keep the receipt so that you can provide proof in case of theft. It is also important to be in possession of both keys and spare keys of the scooter when reporting the theft to the insurance company. The insurer may ask for this.
