It is regularly thought that watercraft is another name for a jet ski. However, this is not entirely true. Although a watercraft and a jet ski are the same for the law, there is a difference between the two craft. A personal watercraft is required to be operated while seated, while a jet ski may be operated while standing. There is little difference between jet ski insurance and personal watercraft insurance. As with the jet ski, it is not mandatory to have boat insurance in the Netherlands. In Spain, Italy, Greece and Croatia, however, it is mandatory. Of course, in the Netherlands it is recommended to insure your watercraft. On Alpina.nl you can read all about insuring a water scooter.

Watercraft insurance against theft

You can take out three different types of cover for your watercraft insurance: third party liability, third party liability + limited company liability or third party liability + full company liability (Allrisk). When you take out a WA boat insurance it means that you will only be compensated for liability damages. If you cause damage to another person with your water scooter, this will be compensated by the insurer. Damage to or theft of your own water scooter will not be covered by a WA-pool insurance. For that you have to choose an extended Casco coverage. This covers theft of the watercraft and damage caused by fire, spontaneous combustion, explosion, joyriding, storm and hail. If you choose an all-risk boat insurance, you are also insured for damage to your own watercraft, even if the damage is your fault. This way you compose your own insurance.

What are the costs of insuring a watercraft?

Insuring a personal watercraft does not have to be expensive. To determine what boat insurance for your watercraft costs, an insurer will look at the following factors:

  • The type of boat
  • The boat's engine
  • The coverage you choose
  • Any claim-free years you have accumulated with a boat insurance policy in the past
  • Any membership in a water sports club

Insure watercraft with 300 hp

Nowadays, there are more and more of them with a power rating of 300 hp. That means they can reach a speed of up to 130 kilometres per hour. A watercraft with 300 hp can reach a speed of 100 kilometres per hour within seconds. For a real speed demon fantastic, but for an insurer risky. The higher the power and the maximum speed, the higher the risk of damage and accidents. Do you want to know which insurers you can go to with your water scooter? Then use our handy online comparator. You fill in some information about your boat and then you will get an overview of all the insurers you can go to, including their premiums.
