What is a Canta?
A Canta is an indoor disabled vehicle specially designed for people with physical impairments or disabilities. You do not need a driver's license to drive a Canta and you must be at least 16 years old.
You are required to have insurance. This obligation applies to the owner or driver of the vehicle. Are you renting the Canta from a care facility? Then you, as the driver, are obliged to take out insurance.
Canta insurance costs
The cost of Canta insurance depends on the type of coverage you choose and the value of your vehicle. The premium is based largely on the value of your Canta. For new models with a high list value, the premium is naturally higher than for an older vehicle with a lower daily value.
On average, you will pay about €50 a month for Canta insurance. For more comprehensive insurance with additional options, that can reach €60 per month or more.
The coverages of your Canta insurance
You are required to have at least third-party liability insurance. You can choose from 2 different coverages to insure your Canta.
There are few insurance companies that insure a Canta. We offer insurance from the Vereende.
More about third-party insurance
Third-party insurance is the minimum and mandatory coverage you must have. This basic coverage ensures that any damage you cause with your Canta will be reimbursed by your insurer. Both material damage and personal injury from the other party can be recovered from your insurer.
Damage to your own vehicle if you are at fault for the accident is not covered.
More about the WA casco insurance (all-risk)
The WA casco insurance also provides coverage for damage to your own Canta. Even if the damage is your own fault. The insurer will also bear the costs for theft, fire, storm damage and hail damage, for example.
So with this insurance you are well insured against various types of damage. The amount of the premium depends mainly on the value of your vehicle.
Additional coverages
In addition to the mandatory third-party insurance, you can choose additional coverage for your Canta. Choose from:
- Recovery Legal Assistance. With this coverage, in the event of an accident, damages and additional costs are recovered from the other party if they are liable.
- Accidental Occupant Coverage. This coverage pays a fixed amount in the event of permanent injury or death to the driver or passenger, regardless of who is at fault for the accident. It is a relatively inexpensive supplement that provides additional security, especially if you take someone with you often.
Policy expires on May 1 each year
Insurance for a Canta always runs from May 1 to May 1 the following year. Do you take out insurance on a different date? The insurer will calculate the premium in proportion to the number of months remaining until May 1.
You always take out the insurance for one year and can easily renew it for the following year. The insurer will send you a new offer every year.
Insurance plate
When you buy insurance online, you don't have coverage right away. You have to wait until you get the insurance plate. This is nowadays a sticker. The insurer sends the sticker to you by mail after acceptance. Place the sticker visibly on the vehicle. This is the proof of insurance.
It is mandatory to attach an insurance plate or insurance sticker to your Canta. You may not be allowed on public roads until the sticker is visible on your Canta. The sticker will state the year you took out the insurance.
Here you may drive a Canta
A Canta is allowed up to 45 km/h and can drive almost anywhere except a car (highway) road. The same traffic regulations apply to a Canta as to a mobility scooter.
- On the roadway a maximum of 45 km/h.
- the (moped) bike path a maximum of 30 km/h inside built-up areas and 40 km/h outside built-up areas.
- On the sidewalk a maximum of 6 mph.

Frequently asked questions about insuring your Canta
Is Canta insurance mandatory?
Yes, it is required by law. As soon as a Canta is registered in your name, you must take out at least third-party insurance. According to the Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM), at least third-party insurance is required as soon as the vehicle is registered in your name.
Even if you don't drive it temporarily, this obligation remains. Only if you officially suspend the vehicle from the RDW may you leave it uninsured.
What does it cost to insure a Canta?
The monthly cost depends on where you live and your age. On average, you pay around €50 per month for third-party insurance. If you choose WA casco insurance, the premium is higher.
What happens if I don't insure my Canta?
If so, you could face a hefty fine from the RDW that could amount to over €400 per month. The RDW imposes a similar fine as for an uninsured car.
Moreover, you are uninsured on the road. Do you get damaged? Then this can lead to high costs. Therefore, always insure your Canta.
Which Canta insurance is the best choice?
You must take out at least third-party insurance to meet the legal obligation. For the premium of the WA casco insurance, an insurer assumes the new value of your Canta.
If you have an older Canta with a low daily value, it often does not make sense to take out this comprehensive insurance.
Do you have an (almost) new Canta with a high daily value? Then the more extensive WA casco is the best choice. With this insurance, you are much more extensively insured. However, the amount of the premium in combination with the daily value of your Canta may cause you to opt for third-party insurance.
Calculation example older Canta
A Canta costs €15,000 new. The vehicle is now old and only has a value of €1,000. For this Canta, taking out liability insurance does not make sense. The premium will exceed €500 per year. Not a smart choice for a Canta with a low daily value.
Calculation example of new Canta
A new Canta costs about €15,000. To cover damage caused by your own fault or vandalism, you can opt for third-party liability insurance including roadside assistance and legal aid.
The total annual premium comes out to about €700. Given the high daily value of the vehicle, this coverage is well justified. one hefty damage can otherwise quickly cost thousands of euros.
Where can I find cheap Canta insurance?
You can usually find the cheapest Canta insurance through a comparator. There you can easily enter your situation and immediately see which insurer offers the lowest premium for your desired level of coverage.
Compared to car insurance, Canta insurance is often a lot cheaper.
What is the difference between a Canta and a mobility scooter?
A Canta is a covered, motorized vehicle that resembles a small car and can travel up to 45 mph. It seats 1 or 2 people and is allowed to travel on the sidewalk, bike path and roadway.
A mobility scooter is an open, electric vehicle with a lower speed (max. 15 mph) that is primarily intended for short distances.
They are both disabled vehicles for people with temporary or permanent disabilities.
