Going on vacation with a roof box: Is it insured?

It’s possible that your roof box could be broken into while you’re traveling, or that the entire roof box could be stolen from your car. If you havetravel insurance, the stolen items will be reimbursed under the luggage coverage of your travel insurance policy, provided that the roof box was securely fastened to the roof racks and properly locked.

However, many insurance companies exclude coverage for theft if, for example, luggage is left unattended in the roof rack overnight. So even when staying at a hotel during a layover, it’s important to remove any (valuable) items from the roof rack. The terms and conditions and coverage may vary by insurance company. It’s therefore important to always read the policy terms and conditions carefully.

Tips

To prevent theft or damage to your roof box, it’s a good idea to always lock it and secure it firmly to the roof racks. It’s also a good idea not to put heavy items in the roof box; this is safer, and it lowers the car’s center of gravity, which makes for a smoother ride. Additionally, it’s advisable not to leave your car unattended when the roof box is loaded and to avoid storing valuables in it. Of course, the same rule applies here: nothing goes in, nothing comes out.
