On holiday with a roof box: is it insured?
Many people take the car out in the summer to enjoy the sun in countries such as Germany, Italy and France. Sometimes not all the luggage fits in the car and a roof box is needed to carry the extra stuff. But how is your roof box insured?
Theft
It could happen that your roof box is broken open while you are travelling or that the entire roof box is stolen from your car. If you have travel insurance, the stolen items will be reimbursed under the luggage cover of your travel insurance, provided that the roof box was properly attached to the luggage carrier and locked.
However, many companies exclude coverage for theft when luggage is left unattended in the roof box overnight, for example. It is therefore important to remove the (valuable) items from the roof box even when passing through a hotel. The conditions and coverage may vary from company to company. It is therefore important to always read the policy conditions carefully.
Damage to roof box
In addition to theft, your roof box can also be damaged, for example, in an accident. Your roof box is not covered by your car insurance. However, some insurance policies include coverage for accessories up to a certain amount. If this is not the case, you can insure your roof box as an extra 'accessory'.
Tips
In order to prevent theft or damage to your roof box, it is advisable to always lock your roof box and secure it to the roof rack. It is also advisable not to put any heavy items in the roof box; this is safer and the centre of gravity of the car is lower, which makes for a nicer drive. It is also advisable not to lose sight of the car with its roof box filled with contents and not to put valuable items in the roof box. Of course the rule is: nothing in, nothing out.
