All about your moped insurance
It is mandatory in the Netherlands to insure your moped with at least third-party insurance. This is required by law and covers damage you cause to others. For your own damage or theft, WA insurance does not provide coverage.
Then choose more comprehensive moped insurance with WA + Theft and Fire (WA+ Limited Comprehensive) or WA + Theft, Fire and Collision (All-risk).
Your moped insurance coverage.
When taking out moped insurance, you have a choice of 3 different coverages. A suitable coverage depends on your personal situation and the type of moped.
WA
Third-party coverage is the basis of moped insurance. It insures you only for liability damage. This makes it the cheapest option. For motor vehicles, it is required by law to have at least third-party coverage.
This insurance pays for damage to others, but not to your own moped. Third-party moped insurance is especially appropriate for older mopeds that have little value.
WA + Theft and Fire (limited casco).
With a WA + Limited Casco moped insurance you are insured if your moped or accessories are stolen. Or if there is damage due to attempted theft, joyriding, fire or storm.
Do you find third-party moped insurance too limited and third-party + Theft, Fire and Collision too expensive? Then this coverage is a good option.
WA + Theft, Fire and Collision (All-risk)
All-risk moped insurance is also called third-party liability + Theft, Fire and Collision. This coverage fully insures your moped against theft, storm, fire, collisions, falls, vandalism, and damage to other vehicles.
It is a popular choice for new or expensive mopeds. People often think that all-risk moped insurance is very expensive, but it often saves only a few euros per month.
Supplements to your insurance
Choose additional coverages to better protect yourself against specific risks. Common additional coverages include:
Accidental occupant(s)
va.
1 ,91
p/month
Accidental passenger(s) coverage pays a fixed amount in the event of permanent disability or death of the driver or passenger(s) due to an accident.
Recourse Legal Assistance
va.
2 ,24
p/month
Insured of legal help in recovering damages from a traffic accident. At home and abroad.
In some situations, you have to make your claim to the person who caused the damage. Normally this is not necessary with the most comprehensive All-risk insurance. This is because the insurer will pay out all the damage to your scooter itself.
Is your scooter WA or WA + Theft and Fire insured, then recovering your damage from the other party is not insured. For this you can take out legal assistance insurance. After damage the insurer will take care of recovering your damage.

Frequently asked questions about moped insurance
What is the deductible in moped insurance?
The deductible is the amount you pay yourself if there is damage. Not all insurers have a deductible. If they do, it is usually up to €150. For damage of €1,000, you will then get €850 if the deductible is €150. Insurers use the deductible so that people are less likely to report damage.
How does canceling a moped insurance policy work?
Moped insurance is standard for one year. After the first year, the insurance is automatically renewed for another year. After that, you can cancel the insurance any day.
Some insurers want you to give one month's notice. If you sell your scooter, you can stop the insurance right away. This makes sense because there is nothing left to insure at that point.
What happens to my claim-free years if I trade in my moped for a car?
Insurers reward claim-free driving with a discount on the premium. Unfortunately, in most cases this rule does not apply if you have your claim-free years to your car insurance. Driving a moped is different from driving a car.
Can I additionally insure my moped?
In addition to the moped insurance, you can also additional supplementary insurances. Not all additional options are always necessary. It is important not to have double insurance. Only choose additional coverage with your moped insurance if it really adds something.
