How many seats are there in a motorhome?
The registration certificate for a newer motorhome lists the number of seats it has. These seats are equipped with seat belts. In that case, the rule is: seats with seat belts may be used while driving; other seats may not.
In older RVs, the number of seats is not listed on the registration certificate. While driving, all seats equipped with seat belts may be used. Older RVs may have seats that do not have seat belts but are intended for use while driving. This was not required at the time.
Seat Belt Requirement for RVs
Whether seat belts are required—and where they must be installed—depends on the age of the RV, and, in the case of an RV, also on whether it is based on a passenger car or a commercial vehicle. On the Dutch government’s website, you can view a chart to determine whether you are allowed to use a seat while driving.
Abroad
Rules abroad may differ from those in the Netherlands. The general rule is that if a seat belt is required in a car, Dutch requirements apply. However, foreign regulations govern the use of seat belts.
