Suspend a Scooter

You can suspend registration of a scooter for 1, 2, or 3 years. The minimum suspension period is therefore 1 year. If you end the suspension within 1 month, you will still have to pay motor vehicle tax for the suspension period through a back-payment notice from the Tax Authority. If you suspend registration of the scooter for 1 year but end the suspension period early, you will not receive a refund.

If your scooter has been de-registered, you are no longer required to have liability insurance. However, you must cancel your scooter insurance yourself. You can do this very easily through your insurer or insurance broker.

Is your insurance through Alpina? You can report a change 24/7 on Alpina.nl. If you no longer meet the mandatory third-party liability insurance requirement—without having your license plate suspended—you will receive a fine from the RDW.

Is your suspension about to expire, and do you want to extend it? If so, you can extend it again by 1, 2, or 3 years. You can do this up to 6 weeks before the suspension’s expiration date. The expiration date will remain the same as the end date of the previous suspension, but will be extended by the number of years you choose.

If you extend the suspension before the 6-week period is up, you will not retain the original expiration date. The date on which you extend the suspension will then become the new expiration date after 1, 2, or 3 years. One month before the suspension expires, you will receive a reminder letter from the RDW. You may suspend a scooter as often as you like.

If you want to use the scooter again before the suspension period ends, you can lift the suspension. If you lift the suspension, it ends immediately. This means you cannot set a future date for the suspension to end.

If you cancel the suspension before the suspension period ends, you will not receive a refund. However, canceling the suspension is free. You can cancel the suspension either online or at the service counter.

You can suspend your scooter online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Go to“Request or extend a suspension.” Then log in with your DigiD. You will then be directed to the RDW service
2. Select the license plate number of the vehicle you want to suspend
3. Select how long you want to suspend the vehicle
4. Pay the suspension fee via iDEAL | Wero
5. You will then receive an email confirming your request. The license plate will be suspended as soon as you receive a second email from the RDW. This email also includes the end date of the suspension and serves as proof of your suspension. That is why it is important that you keep it in a safe place.

If you'd rather suspend your scooter in person at the office, you can follow these steps:

1. Go to a vehicle registration office, RDW inspection station, or RDW service counter
2. Bring the certificate of registration and the transfer certificate OR the license plate card and the registration code. Don't forget to bring a valid form of identification.
3. Select how long you want to suspend the vehicle
4. Pay the suspension fees. The employee will then provide you with a suspension report that also includes the end date of the suspension. This serves as your proof of suspension, so it’s important that you keep it in a safe place.
