Should I purchase temporary car insurance for my vacation?
If you are taking your car on vacation abroad, it is important to find out how well you are insured with your car during your vacation. Fortunately, you can find this out very easily. On your green card, which you receive after taking out a car insurance policy, it says in which vacation countries your green card is valid. Are you taking your car into a country where your car insurance is not valid? Then you can get a temporary car insurance. You can often arrange temporary car insurance at the border of the country in question.

Are you going on vacation abroad with your car? Then your car insurance offers coverage in most EU countries. In which countries you have coverage is mentioned on your green card. Always check before departure what you are and are not insured for abroad and which requirements apply in the countries you drive through. For example, in most countries you do not need to have your green card with you, but in some countries it is mandatory. Your green card also lists phone numbers to call in case of damage or an accident.
When temporary car insurance for vacation?
In the countries that are not on your green card or are on it but have been crossed out, you do not have third-party coverage. In that case, you can often purchase temporary car insurance at the border of the country in question. The cost of temporary car insurance at the border can vary from country to country. Before you go abroad, it is smart to check which countries you are driving through. Not only for car insurance, but also because each country has different requirements regarding things around the car. For example, some countries require you to carry a warning triangle and a safety vest as standard. If you don't have these, you risk a fine.
Temporary car insurance provides coverage in Europe
With the 1-day insurance you only have coverage in the Netherlands during the drive from your home to the RDW and back for the day of the inspection. With the 15-day temporary insurance, you have coverage throughout Europe. You cannot take out temporary car insurance for a vacation through Alpina. You can arrange this at the border of the country concerned. However, you can take out a 1-day or 15-day car insurance for an inspection appointment or when exporting a vehicle abroad.
