Do I need to get temporary car insurance for my vacation?
If you’re going on vacation abroad with your car, it’s important to check how well you’re covered while driving during your trip. Fortunately, it’s very easy to find out. Your Green Card, which you receive after taking out auto insurance, lists the countries where it is valid. If you’re driving into a country where your auto insurance isn’t valid, you can purchase temporary auto insurance. You can often arrange temporary auto insurance at the border of that country.
Cars are usually automatically insured abroad
Are you planning to take your car on vacation abroad? If so, your auto insurance will generally provide coverage in most EU countries. The countries where you’re covered are listed on your Green Card. Before you leave, always check what you are and aren’t insured for abroad and what requirements apply in the countries you’ll be driving through. In most countries, you don’t need to carry your Green Card with you, but in some countries it’smandatory. Your Green Card also lists phone numbers you can call in the event of damage or an accident.
When should you get temporary car insurance for a vacation?
In countries that are not listed on your green card—or that are listed but crossed out—you do not have liability coverage. In that case, you can often purchase temporary auto insurance at the border of the country in question. The cost of temporary auto insurance at the border may vary by country. Before traveling abroad, it’s a good idea to check which countries you’ll be driving through. Not only for car insurance purposes, but also because each country has different requirements regarding vehicle-related matters. For example, in some countries, you’re required by law to carry a warning triangle and a safety vest. If you don’t have these, you risk a fine.
Temporary auto insurance provides coverage in Europe
With the 1-day insurance policy, you’re only covered in the Netherlands during the trip from your home to the RDW and back on the day of the inspection. With the 15-day temporary insurance policy, you’re covered throughout Europe. You cannot purchase temporary auto insurance for a vacation through Alpina. You can arrange this at the border of the country in question. However, you can purchase 1-day or 15-day auto insurance for a vehicle inspection appointment or when you’re exporting a vehicle abroad.
