Can I take out glass insurance as an additional cover?

It is possible to take out glass insurance as additional coverage or as an extension within your building insurance.
With most insurers glass is not standard insured. If you have glass damage to your home, it is of course very annoying. It makes it very easy for burglars to enter your home and, especially in winter, it can get very cold in the house. An accident is in a small corner, so it could just happen that a window of your house breaks. Perhaps glass insurance can help.

Is all the glass in the house insured with glass insurance?

With glass insurance, you are insured for damage to windows. This means all windows that are meant to let daylight in. All other glass in the house, such as mirrors or an aquarium, is not covered by glass insurance. Other (more expensive) types of glass, such as stained or cut glass, are not always covered by glass insurance. It is best to check the policy conditions for this.

What to do in case of glass damage (rental) house?

When you discover that your house has window damage, it is annoying enough. At that point you want the glass repaired as soon as possible. If you live in a rented house, rather than a private one, other conditions may apply. If your rental property is damaged, it is best to contact the landlord directly. It is likely that the landlord has stated in the rental contract what he expects from you in terms of insurance. The landlord usually includes an amount for insurance in the rental price. Check carefully in the rental contract whether window damage to the house is also insured. If it is not clear, ask the landlord about this to avoid confusion and extra costs.

What do you need to consider with glass insurance?

When your house becomes vacant due to moving house, there may no longer be any coverage on the glass insurance. This has to do with the fact that windows of unoccupied houses are smashed and destroyed more quickly than those of inhabited houses. Are you planning a renovation? Check the policy conditions to be sure. Also during a renovation there is a higher chance that a window will be broken. It is advisable to communicate such changes in the home situation with your insurer in time so that you are aware of the consequences for you.
