Home Car Insurance Theft Car papers stolen

What to do if your car papers are stolen?

To be properly insured on the road, you need car papers in addition to taking out a car insurance policy. With these car papers you can show that the vehicle is registered in your name and that your car is insured.

If your car documents have been stolen and you no longer have the registration card and/or registration code, you can apply for a new registration card and/or registration code via the website of the National Vehicle Authority (RDW).

Car documents stolen: request new registration card

Since 1 January 2014, the paper registration certificate (part |A, |B and part ||) has been replaced by a credit card-sized certificate (also known as a registration card) and a registration code.

If you have lost your registration certificate, you can apply for a new one online on the RDW website. An application for a replacement registration certificate is only possible if the vehicle is in your name. If you give someone else permission to apply for it on your behalf, this is also possible. The new registration card and letter with registration code will always be sent to the address of the registered owner as known to the municipality.
The cost of a new registration card including registration code is €31.50.

After receiving the new registration certificate, please destroy any old (paper) registration certificates. These are no longer valid.

Apply for a new registration code

You need a registration code when selling, exporting, scrapping or suspending your car. Do you still have the registration certificate, but have you lost the registration code? Then you do not need to request a new registration card, but you can download a new registration code online. You will receive a new 9-digit registration code. This will replace the old registration code. The cost of a new registration code is €1.

Can I request Registration Code for/on behalf of someone else?

Applying for a registration code for or on behalf of someone else is different from applying for the registration code for yourself. In that case, it is not possible to download the code online. This is also not possible if you do not have a DigiD. In that case, go to the RDW website and make sure that you have the chassis number to hand. You can find this number on the back of the registration card. After payment, you will receive an e-mail confirmation and a new registration code by post. RDW always sends the registration code to the address registered with the municipality of the person who has the vehicle in his/her name. Is this not the intention or did the person die or emigrate before 01-01-2017? Then contact RDW customer service on telephone number 088-008 74 47.

Car papers stolen from lease car what should I do now?

Do you own a lease car? Then contact the lease company. A new registration certificate and new registration code for the vehicle can only be requested by the owner of the car. In this case, it is the lease company. It is therefore important that you let the lease company know that your car papers have been stolen. They will then send you the new registration card.

Do you keep the registration certificate in the car?

It is not wise to keep your registration certificate in the car. If you are stopped by the police, you will always be asked for your driving licence and registration certificate. From 1 January 2014, the new registration card with registration code will be issued. If you are asked for the registration certificate, you must show the card. You should always have this with you when you take the car on the road. The registration code should never be kept in the car, but at home in a safe place.

If you have a paper registration certificate, you must be able to show Registration Certificate Part 1A (vehicle certificate) and Part 1B (registration certificate), when asked by the police.
Registration Certificate part 1A contains information about the car itself. Registration Certificate Part 1B is the registration certificate and contains information about the current registration holder.
Part II of the paper registration certificate should never be kept in the car. This is the registration certificate and is needed to transfer the registration to another name. So keep Part II at home in a safe place. If you have lost both Part I and Part II of the registration certificate, the car can be transferred to another name without difficulty.
