Why standard car insurance is not enough

Standard car insurance is mainly designed for average cars and usually does not take into account the exceptional value and specific risks of a Ferrari. In case of damage or theft, the payout can therefore be quite disappointing, as many insurers assume the daily value rather than the actual or appraised value of your sports car.

The high cost of repairs and the need for original parts are also often not fully covered. Moreover, additional concerns apply with a Ferrari, such as the higher risk of expensive damages due to the car's power and exclusivity. Therefore, you need specialized insurance that takes into account the unique features of your Ferrari.

Insure accessories and upgrades

A Ferrari often comes with exclusive accessories and upgrades that further enhance the car's experience and performance. Think carbon fiber interior finishes, special rims, high-end audio systems or ceramic brake discs. In addition, many owners opt for tuning or performance upgrades, such as modifications to the engine power or exhaust system.

With standard car insurance, accessories are usually only covered to a limited extent, often up to an amount of €1,000 to €2,500. For a Ferrari, this is often not enough, as one set of original rims can already cost thousands of euros.

It is therefore wise to choose insurance that includes accessories and upgrades at a higher value, or even completely based on valuation. This way you can be sure that your investments in luxury and performance are well protected.

Claim-free years: impact on your premium

The more claim-free years you have accumulated, the more advantageous your Ferrari insurance premium will be. If you do not claim any damage during an insurance year, you build up one claim-free year. On the contrary, if you make a claim, you lose claim-free years, which affects your premium.

New value or purchase value: how does compensation work?

In a damage claim, how the compensation is calculated plays a big role. A standard car insurance policy usually pays out the daily value: the value of the car at the time of the damage. However, for an exclusive sports car like a Ferrari, this is usually not enough because of its great value.

Do you drive a new Ferrari? If so, the new-for-old value policy is recommended. With this you will receive the full new-for-old value of the car for up to 3 years in the event of total loss or theft.

With a used model, the purchase value arrangement offers similar security: the insurer then temporarily pays the purchase price in the event of damage. Both schemes are optional, depending on the model and policy conditions.

Additional security requirements in luxury sports cars

Insurers often impose stricter security requirements on luxury and powerful cars such as a Ferrari. This is because these cars are attractive to theft and have a high market value. Consider requirements such as a Class 5 vehicle tracking system, SCM-certified alarm systems or advanced immobilizers.

Sometimes they also require additional measures, such as storage in a locked garage or the use of a wheel clamp when stationary for long periods of time. By meeting these requirements, you not only reduce the risk of theft, but often benefit from a lower insurance premium.

So it is wise to check in advance what security terms your insurer has for a Ferrari.

Frequently asked questions about Ferrari insurance

What types of insurance are appropriate for a Ferrari?

All-risk insurance is usually chosen for a Ferrari because of the car's high value. Additional coverages such as roadside assistance, legal aid and a reduced deductible option are also recommended.

Why is Ferrari insurance more expensive than standard car insurance?

Ferrari insurance is more expensive because of its high daily value, more expensive repair costs, and increased risk of damage or theft. Insurers also take into account the sporty nature of the car.

Are my accessories and options covered as standard?

Original factory options are usually included as standard coverage up to a certain amount. You can purchase additional coverage for more expensive or exclusive accessories.

When does a mandatory alarm system or vehicle tracking system apply?

For cars with a list value of about €75,000 or more, insurers often impose additional security requirements, depending on the model and region.

How can I save on my Ferrari insurance?

You can save by comparing multiple quotes, choosing a higher deductible or insuring the Ferrari only as a second car. Storage in a secure garage can also lower the premium.

Is all-risk insurance required for a Ferrari?

All-risk insurance is not required by law, but is highly recommended. Because of the value of a Ferrari, WA or WA+ limited is often insufficient coverage in the event of damage.

Can I temporarily insure a Ferrari?

Yes, some insurers offer temporary insurance, such as for transportation or an event. These are often more expensive per day, but useful for short-term use.

Does the value of my Ferrari affect the premium?

Yes, the list value and current market value determine the amount of the premium. The higher the value, the more expensive the insurance.

What happens to my insurance in case of damage or theft?

In case of damage or theft, the insurer will reimburse the current market value or a pre-agreed appraisal value. Make sure your Ferrari is properly appraised and that you know all the conditions around deductibles and depreciation rules.
