Temporary Car Insurance for Imported Vehicles

What is the purpose of the certificate of indemnification when a car is taken to the junkyard?

The certificate of release shows that a vehicle’s license plate is no longer registered in your name. If you’ve sold your car, you can use the certificate of release to prove that you are no longer required to fulfill your vehicle obligations. Are you having the car scrapped? In that case, you’ll also receive a certificate of release. We’ll explain what a certificate of release is used for when scrapping a car and how to obtain one.

Have your car scrapped at an RDW-approved company

If you want to have your car scrapped, you can only do so at a so-called RDW-certified dismantling company. You can recognize an RDW-certified dismantling company by its white and orange logo that reads “RDW-certified vehicle dismantling.” You can also find a list of all certified companies on the RDW website. After the vehicle is scrapped, the dismantling company will ensure that your registration in the RDW license plate registry is terminated, so that the car’s license plate is no longer registered in your name.

Why is a certificate of release important when scrapping a car?

Once the car has been scrapped and the license plate has been deactivated, you are, of course, no longer required to comply with vehicle obligations, such as the APK, road tax, and car insurance. This is because the car has been scrapped. However, you do need the certificate of release to prove this. That is why a certificate of release is also important when you have your car scrapped.

How does the process of scrapping a car work?

If you want to have your car scrapped, follow these steps:

  1. Make an appointment with an RDW-approved dismantling facility
  2. Bring the complete vehicle registration certificate or registration card, along with the registration code, to the scrapyard
  3. The employee will deregister your license plate with the RDW and will also provide you with the certificate of release.
  4. Your registration in the RDW vehicle registry has now been terminated. Please note that you must cancel your auto insurance yourself. The motor vehicle tax will be automatically discontinued. The requirement for an APK inspection will also no longer apply.
