What should I do if I haven't received a certificate of indemnification?
The certificate of release allows you to prove that a license plate is no longer registered in your name and that you are therefore no longer required to fulfill the vehicle obligations. That is why it is important to keep the certificate of release in a safe place. When you sell your car, you receive the certificate of release when the license plate is transferred. Often, the buyer of the car handles the transfer. The buyer must then mail the certificate of release to you. Unfortunately, this isn’t always done carefully. The certificate of release can get lost or not be mailed at all. So make sure you always receive the certificate of release. We’ll explain how it works.
Who will issue me the certificate of indemnification?
You will receive the certificate of release when you transfer the vehicle registration. You can do this at a vehicle registration office, an RDW service counter, an RDW inspection station, or a PostNL location. The staff member at the location will then give you the certificate of release. If the buyer is handling the transfer, it is important that you make clear arrangements regarding the handover of the certificate of release. Without the certificate of release, you cannot prove that you are no longer liable for the car and the associated obligations.
You can also transfer the license plate online. You will then receive the certificate of transfer via email. If you receive the certificate of transfer via email, it’s important to save it immediately and print it out if necessary, so you can be sure you don’t accidentally lose the file.
How can I apply for a new certificate of indemnity?
The RDW issues a certificate of discharge only once. If you have not received a certificate of discharge, you cannot apply for a new one, but you can request an extract of your personal data from the RDW vehicle registration registry. This includes all your registered personal and vehicle data from the past 9 years. It therefore also indicates when a license plate was transferred.
You can request the extract in writing or online. If you request the extract in writing, please note that it takes 9 business days to process. You can also request the extract online, in which case you’ll be able to view the information immediately. The fee for an extract is €4.50. You can pay this fee via iDEAL | Wero or bank transfer.
