Import car insurance: what about it?
Especially for used cars, it is interesting to import them. In 2016, almost 170,000 used cars were imported. That was an increase of 20% compared to the year 2015. Young cars are especially popular. Importing the car itself does require some effort. Also for insuring you have to be very alert.
Can importing a car be off?
Due to the high tax burden in the Netherlands and the large price differences with other countries, it can sometimes be worthwhile to buy a used car abroad. Because of the costs of importing, it is especially worth it for young used cars. It will cost you effort, but you do it for the financial benefit. Keep in mind, however, that imported cars are also more difficult to sell. Many potential buyers are afraid that there is something wrong with the car. Even if the condition of the car is perfect.
When can I insure the imported car?
As long as the car has not yet been officially imported, you cannot yet get regular car insurance in the Netherlands. However, abroad they can provide a temporary solution, namely a so-called export license plate. Just make sure you have things properly arranged. The consequences of not being insured can be severe. You cannot insure a car with a foreign license plate in the Netherlands. So you have to move the car to the Netherlands first.
Applying for a Dutch number plate
For a Dutch vehicle registration, you must first make an appointment with the RDW for an inspection or examination. You can apply for a one-day licence plate with the RDW. But beware! The license plate must also be insured. After the car has been approved, you have to make a declaration to the tax authorities. The tax office issues a so-called BPM-agreement. The RDW then sends you the vehicle registration certificate within four working days.
As soon as the Dutch licence plate has been issued, the car can be insured in the regular way. You don't want to pay too much, so you should compare well before you take out a policy with an insurer.
Importing a car is subject to procedures that differ per country. There are specialized companies that can arrange everything for you, but it will cost you money. Make sure you familiarize yourself with the matter before you start importing a car. Also make sure that you have a clear overview of the total costs in advance. Prevent financial surprises from popping up during the import process.
