Is your car not yet registered you have to drive to an RDW inspection station? Then you need a temporary (one-day) car insurance. With this you are insured for the ride to and from the inspection.

Be sure to provide the correct date of insurance so that the coverage matches exactly the day you drive the car to the inspection.

Every car on public roads must have at least third-party liability (TPL) insurance. If you take out car insurance for 1 day, you can only choose a temporary third-party insurance. This insurance pays out if you cause damage to third parties with your vehicle.

This temporary car insurance is mandatory for any car driving on public roads, even if it is only for one day. You have a legal obligation to insure your car. This also applies to temporary situations such as a trip to the inspection station.

It is not possible to take out temporary limited-casco or all-risk car insurance.

In these cases, you must have your car inspected at the RDW

A car must be inspected at the RDW (National Road Administration) in certain cases.

In those situations, you often need a one-day registration plate to legally drive the car to the inspection. You need to arrange the one-day registration plate through the RDW (rdw aanvragen).

When importing a car from abroad

The car must be technically approved and registered before you can drive it in the Netherlands.

In case of damage repair with WOK (Wait for Inspection) status

Has your car been declared totaled and restored? Then you must go to the RDW for re-inspection.

When converting (e.g. to motorhome or LPG)

If you modify the construction or use of the car, it must be approved.

In the case of self-builds or kit cars

If you build a vehicle yourself or have it built, it must be inspected before it gets a license plate.

Remember to arrange insurance for the correct inspection date; in fact, insurance is valid only on the day of the inspection.

Exporting a car? Choose 14-day coverage

Do you want to temporarily insure your car for a longer period of time? Temporary 14-day insurance is especially useful if, for example, you are exporting a car abroad. With the 14-day temporary car insurance you will also get a green card.

Can you cancel car insurance for 1 day?

When you take out a car insurance policy, you can cancel it up to the effective date of the coverage, as long as this is notified on a working day before 5 p.m. Has the insurance already started? Then you can no longer cancel it.

Can I take out business day insurance for a car?

This insurance is for private use only. Thus, you cannot take out temporary car insurance for business purposes.

Is a one-day registration also mandatory?

Yes, if the car does not yet have a Dutch registration plate or is suspended, you must apply to the RDW for a one-day registration plate. This license plate is only valid on the day of the inspection. So you often need both a one-day registration plate and car insurance for 1 day.
