Student Auto Insurance
There is no such thing as a special student auto insurance policy. However, it is certainly possible for students to purchase auto insurance. It just has to be feasible to afford a car and auto insurance on top of an expensive college education. In addition, students face the challenge of their age. Car insurance isn’t cheap for students. This is because young people under 24 have to pay significantly more for car insurance due to a premium surcharge. Furthermore, there are often additional requirements for young people who want to take out car insurance. It’s therefore important to carefully compare the different car insurance policies to make an informed choice.
Car Insurance for Students
Car insurance for students under 24 is generally more expensive than for students 24 and older. Age is therefore a factor that determines the premium. Statistics show that young people are more likely to cause damage and be involved in accidents. This explains the difference in premiums. Age isn’t the only factor considered when determining the premium amount. The premium also depends on the type of car and its engine power. A new or (more expensive) sports car is often more difficult for young people to insure.

Claim-Free Years for Students
The number of claim-free years helps determine your auto insurance premium. As long as you don’t file any at-fault claims on your auto insurance policy, you’ll accumulate claim-free years. The more claim-free years you accumulate, the larger the discount on your premium. For students, the discount from accumulating claim-free years is usually not yet noticeable. This is because young people have accumulated few or no claim-free years. As a result, they miss out on this premium discount.
Car Insurance in the Parents' Name
Young people looking to purchase car insurance often think it’s a good idea to take out the policy in their parents’ names. This can indeed lower the premium. However, when you take out a policy, you’ll be asked who the primary driver is. If one of the parents indicates that the regular driver is one of their children, the insurer will base the premium on that information. As a result, you’ll still end up paying a higher premium. If the parents fail to disclose that their child is the regular driver, this can have serious consequences. In this case, insurance fraud has been committed because false information was provided to the insurer.
Please note that the car must be registered in the name of one of the parents. This is because the auto insurance must always be in the name of the car's owner or their partner.
