What is business liability insurance?
Business liability insurance protects you from the cost of damages caused. This can happen during work, due to a faulty product or on company premises. The insurance also applies to damage caused by employees or hired self-employed workers during their work.
Liability claims sometimes run high. Especially when personal injury is involved. With business liability insurance, you are insured for this type of liability damage to a client.
AVB is not required
The law does not require companies to have business liability insurance. Companies may choose whether to insure themselves for damages they cause to others. Yet many clients and industry associations do require AVB as a condition of working together.
Without an AVB, as an entrepreneur or self-employed person, you are at great financial risk. One claim can quickly cost thousands or tens of thousands of euros.
Business liability insurance coverage.
Business liability insurance usually covers damage you or your employees cause to persons or property of others while conducting your business. This includes both property damage and personal injury.
An AVB can be customized to your company's risks and sometimes provides additional coverage, for example, for environmental damage. Not everything is covered. So always check the terms and conditions and take out additional insurance where necessary.
Business liability insurance coverage is similar to Individual Liability Insurance (AVP), but for your business.
This is what an AVB covers
You are insured for the following damages:In most cases, an AVB provides coverage both in the Netherlands and abroad.

This is what an AVB does not cover
- Intentional damage.
- Fines or guarantees.
- Damage to yourself or your business is usually not insured.
- Damages or costs if you have to redeliver the product or service.
- Environmental damage at the company site and damage caused, for example, by a leaking oil tank that occurs slowly are not insured.
- Items you have in your care temporarily, such as a kitchen or bathroom that you need to install, are also not insured if damage occurs to them.
- If your work is not good enough and you have to redo it, you cannot claim those costs from the insurer.
- Professional errors are also not covered by business liability insurance. You insure these with professional liability insurance.
Always check the insurer's policy conditions to see what exceptions there are.
Not all employees are co-insured by default
With liability insurance (AVB), the company itself is the policyholder and thus insured for damage to persons or property of third parties. In many cases, employees are also co-insured. This means that damage they cause during their work is covered through the AVB.
Not all employees are automatically co-insured. Certain professions, such as doctors or lawyers, often require separate professional liability insurance policies. Therefore, always check the coverage and terms of your AVB to know who is insured and purchase additional insurance if necessary.
Cost of corporate liability insurance
The cost of an AVB is different for every business owner. Are you a marketer and work mostly in the office? Then you will pay less premium than the owner of a small painting company. Your profession and the size of your business affect the cost of your business liability insurance.
Factors of premium level
The following factors determine the amount of your premium:
The number of employees you employ
The industry in which you operate and the profession you practice
Your gross annual salary and annual sales
The amount you want to insure
Any membership in a trade association or umbrella organization
Types of liability: product and employer liability
There are several types of liability you may face as a business, namely product liability and employer liability.
Product Liability
Product liability means that a manufacturer is responsible for damages caused by a broken or dangerous product it has sold. This applies if there are errors in design, manufacturing, or if the instructions for use are not clear.
Even if the manufacturer is not at fault, it may still be liable if its product causes harm to people or property.
The manufacturer can sometimes limit its liability, for example, if the damage is not due to the product itself or if the user is also responsible.
Employer's Liability
Employer liability means that an employer is responsible if an employee is harmed on the job. This can happen due to dangerous situations or if safety rules are not followed. To prevent this, an employer must provide a safe workplace. This can be done by providing protective equipment, providing clear explanations and identifying risks.
If an employee does get hurt, he or she can hold the employer liable. That's why it's smart to get proper insurance, such as business liability insurance (AVB). This will prevent financial problems and damage to your company's reputation.

Frequently asked questions about business liability insurance
Who is business liability insurance for?
Business liability insurance is for small and large entrepreneurs, sole proprietors and sole proprietors. After all, any business can face liability damages.
What is insured with business liability insurance?
With business liability insurance you are insured for damages caused in the course of your work. If you own a painting business and accidentally drop a pot of paint on a customer's carpet, you are insured for that.
What is not insured with business liability insurance?
With business liability insurance, you are not insured for professional liability. For this you need a professional liability insurance. Items you have "under supervision" are not insured. Think for example of a kitchen or bathroom that you have to install.
Always check the policy conditions to see if there are more exclusions. This varies by insurer.
What is the difference between business liability insurance (AVB) and professional indemnity insurance (BAV)?
Business liability insurance is often confused with professional liability insurance. Professional liability insurance insures financial losses suffered by your client due to professional misconduct for which you are liable and is especially relevant to business owners whose work involves providing advice, such as consultants or engineers.
Is business liability insurance mandatory?
No, business liability insurance is not mandatory. However, it can be a very useful addition to your business insurance. After all, an accident is in a small corner and it is not nice if you have to pay for the financial consequences of a damage yourself.
Moreover, suppliers or clients increasingly do not want to do business if someone is not insured.
Why do you need to take out an AVB?
Liability insurance is an important insurance for your business. While at work, you or one of your employees may accidentally cause damage to the belongings of others or to others themselves.
When personal injury occurs, the costs can quickly reach tens of thousands of dollars. Business liability insurance provides coverage in many situations and can then be the solution.
