What does the deductible mean in liability insurance?

With many insurance policies, you pay a deductible in the event of a claim. The deductible for liability insurance is the portion of the claim amount that you must pay yourself. Suppose the deductible is €100 and you have a claim of €1,000; in that case, you will receive €900 from the insurer. The remaining €100 is at your own expense.

Liability Insurance Deductible Per Occurrence

This deductible for your liability insurance generally applies per claim. If you file a claim four times a year, you’ll pay the deductible four times. This is different from your health insurance, where the deductible applies to the entire year.

Example:You have incurred €5,000 in damages. The insurance policy states that you have a deductible of €250 per incident. You will therefore receive a maximum reimbursement of €4,750. Example:You live in Amsterdam and have incurred €1,000 in damages due to theft. The insurance policy states that you have a deductible of €250 per incident. Because you live in one of the major cities, an additional deductible of €100 applies. In this case, you will be reimbursed a maximum of €650.

What is the deductible on my liability insurance?

With most insurers, there is no deductible. This means that if you accidentally damage someone else’s property, you do not have to contribute to the cost of the damage. In special cases, an insurer may impose a deductible, but this will be explicitly stated.

What is covered under my liability insurance?

If you’re looking into liability insurance, you’ll naturally want to know exactly what’s covered—in terms of the amount, but also which members of your family are covered. Read more here about what to look for when choosing coverage.

Up to what amount am I insured?

When taking out liability insurance, you can choose the amount for which you want to be insured. This may vary by insurer. Coverage amounts range from 1 to 5 million euros per incident, but 2.5 million is the most common coverage amount. You can often choose between two coverage amounts. Would you like to know exactly what your maximum coverage amount is? If so, check the policy terms and conditions of your insurance.
