MMBS registration number
A Limited Speed Motor Vehicle (MMBS) is a vehicle with a maximum speed of 25 km/h or 45 km/h. Prior to 2021, an MMBS was exempt from registration requirements, but nowadays this requirement also applies to (land) construction vehicles, including the MMBS.
What is an MMBS?
An MMBS often looks like an ordinary passenger car or van, but is not designed for that. The vehicle is not equipped for passenger transport, but for specific (agricultural) activities. Think, for example, of delivering or picking up goods at short distances. Examples of MMBS vehicles are sweepers, mobile excavators, combine harvesters, mobile stores (SRV wagons) and shredders.
Registration requirement for MMBS
Since Jan. 1, 2021, many MMBS vehicles have been subject to registration requirements. This means that these vehicles must be registered and receive license plates. These are vehicles with a maximum construction speed of more than 6 km/h traveling on public roads. Do you doubt whether your vehicle requires registration? On the RDW website you can easily check whether registration is required using the decision aid.
There are also exceptions. No registration and license plate requirement applies to:
- Vehicles with a maximum construction speed under 6 mph
- 1-axle motor coaches
- Asphalt pavers, asphalt milling machines and rollers
- Vehicles narrower than 130 cm, such as machines for mowing, sweeping, snow removal, weed control or ice control
- Forklifts without interchangeable front trailed attachment
Additionally, as of Jan. 1, 2025, all MMBSs subject to registration will be required to have a license plate, regardless of their maximum speed.
MMBS license plate application
On the RDW website you can register your MMBS. To do this, you must log in with your DigiD. Keep some information about the vehicle handy, such as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), make and trade name of the vehicle and the year of construction. After you have paid the €18 fee via iDeal, you will receive a confirmation email from the RDW. After the application has been approved, you will receive the registration certificate within 20 working days. One working day later you will receive the registration code.
MMBS license plate transfer
If you bought an MMBS, the owner must have the license plate transferred to your name. We call this transfer. How the transfer is done depends on where you bought the MMBS. This may be another private individual, for example, but also a legal entity or a company recognized by the RDW. You can arrange the transfer online, but also at a license plate counter, RDW inspection station or an RDW desk.
MMBS insurance
Through Alpina, you can easily calculate an indication of the monthly premium. All you have to do is enter a few details about the vehicle and your age. This will give you an idea of the amount of the monthly premium. Then you can request a final quote. Does the proposal appeal to you? Then you can immediately and easily take out the MMBS insurance.
