Transfer claim-free years with motorhome insurance

Do you have camper insurance in your name? If you drive your camper without causing any damage, you automatically build up claim-free years. Claim-free years result in a discount on your camper insurance premium. This no-claims discount can be as high as 80% on the basic premium.

The maximum discount may vary depending on the insurer. However, claim-free years are personal. This means that you only accumulate claim-free years if the motorhome insurance is in your name. Suppose you and your partner have a motorhome that you both drive, but the motorhome insurance is in your partner's name. In that case, you will not accumulate any claim-free years yourself. In certain situations, it is possible to transfer claim-free years, for example, in the event of your partner's death. We will explain it to you!

Can I take over claim-free years from my deceased partner?

If you share a motorhome with your partner, the motorhome insurance is in the name of one of the partners. Only the partner in whose name the motorhome insurance is taken out accumulates no-claims years. In theory, this means that you would be left with nothing if your partner were to die. Without no-claims years, motorhome insurance becomes a lot more expensive.

However, since January 1, 2022, it has been possible to transfer your partner's accumulated no-claims years to your own policy. Before this date, many insurers were already lenient in this regard, but the new legislation now provides a clear policy. This is good news, because when your partner dies, you have other things on your mind than claim-free years. The only conditions are that you are registered at the same address as your partner and that you (of course) have a valid driver's license.

Can I take over claim-free years in a divorce?

In a divorce, joint assets are divided between both ex-partners. If you and your partner have an RV together, either one of you will take the RV with you or perhaps you jointly decide to sell it. At the time you want to purchase RV insurance again, it is nice to have claim-free years. These provide for a considerably lower premium. With most insurers claim-free years remain valid for 3 years after ending your camper insurance. So you have to take out a new motor home insurance within 3 years if you want to be able to use the claim-free years.

Was the motorhome insurance in your partner's name? Then you yourself have not accrued any claim-free years. However, in case of a divorce, the claim-free years can be divided between the ex-partners. The partner in whose name the pure claim-free years stand determines the division key. With a waiver, this partner waives (part of) the claim-free years. This arrangement prevents one of the two partners from being left without any claim-free years.

Can I carry over claim-free years after a lease?

There are also a number of RV leasing options available today. When you lease a motorhome, you do not own it and you return it at the end of the lease period. This means that the motorhome and the motorhome insurance are in the name of the leasing company, so you yourself do not accrue any claim-free years. It used to be up to the insurance company how these claim-free years were handled. Nowadays, you can use a lease statement to register pure claim-free years in Roy-data. This allows you to take the claim-free years from your lease contract and use them for your own motorhome insurance.

Can I transfer claim-free years from a foreign motorhome insurance policy?

Claim-free years are registered in Roy-data after an insurance policy is terminated. If you take out a new motor home insurance policy, the insurer can retrieve your accrued claim-free years from Roy-data and link them to the new policy. This only applies to claim-free years accrued in the Netherlands. If you have had a motor home insurance policy abroad for some time with which you have accumulated claim-free years, these will not be registered. You can take over the claim-free years from a foreign motor home insurance policy by asking the insurer for a written statement stating the number of accrued claim-free years. Since January 1, 2022, the insurer is obliged to grant these claim-free years.
