Moped license plate

All new mopeds must have a license plate. A moped without a license plate is not allowed on public roads. Did you buy an older moped before 2007 or was your license plate stolen? Then apply for a license plate for your moped.

Apply for moped license plates through the RDW

Have your moped inspected by RDW before you apply for a license plate. During the inspection the RDW checks whether your moped complies with the rules for driving on public roads. They also check the technical condition.

Apply for license plate for moped from 2007 or older

In 2007, the license plate for mopeds was introduced. Mopeds from before 2007 usually do not have a license plate. Are you buying an old moped, for example from family or through a second-hand website? Then you need to apply for a license plate yourself. Also, arrange moped insurance right away before you hit the road. Third-party insurance is mandatory.

Moped license plate application in 4 steps

Step 2
Apply for a one-day license plate. This will allow you to drive to the inspection station on the day of the inspection.
Step 3
You will receive a registration card by mail from the RDW within 5 working days after the inspection. One working day later you will receive a letter with the registration code. From that moment, all vehicle obligations apply, such as having a license plate and third-party insurance.
Step 4
Buy the license plate from an RDW-approved license plate manufacturer.

Conditions for applying for license plate

There are some conditions to applying for a license plate:

You are at least 16 years old.

You are registered in the Basic Registration of Persons.

You appear in person at the inspection.

You have a valid ID with you.

License plate check moped

Once a license plate is registered in your name, your personal data are recorded in the RDW's license plate register. In addition, data about the vehicle are also registered. To find out these data, you can do a license plate check. This is useful if you want to buy or sell a moped.

You can only request data about the moped that is non-privacy sensitive. So someone can't just find out your personal data. Think of your address and phone number. That's nice.

You can see these details of a moped

The data you do see with a license plate check include:

the type and make of vehicle

the number of owners

when the MOT expires

date of last transfer

Whether third-party insurance has been registered

Moped license plate lost

Has your moped's license plate been stolen or lost? Then buy a new license plate from an RDW-approved manufacturer. Bring the original vehicle certificate with you, such as the paper registration certificate (Part IA) or the registration card. The price for a new license plate varies by manufacturer.

Duplicate code

You will receive your new license plates with a duplicate code. The duplicate code is a number on the license plate that indicates how many times license plates have been issued for the moped.

Color of the license plate

What color your moped's license plate is depends on the type of moped and the speed limit.

Yellow license plate

Speed:

mopeds with a yellow license plate are suitable for higher speeds, up to a maximum of 45 km/h. This applies, for example, to scooters and other fast mopeds.

Place on the road:

you usually ride within built-up areas on the carriageway between cars instead of on the bike path.
