Where can I transfer a moped?

There are several places where you can transfer a moped, such as a license plate counter, a PostNL location, an RDW inspection station or an RDW counter. During the registration process, the moped's registration number is transferred to the new owner's name. You can also register the moped online. You can do this with the DigiD app. Here you can read all about online registration of a moped.

At the time of the transfer, you will receive a certificate of release from liability. This certificate of indemnity is for the seller of the moped. With the indemnification certificate, the seller can prove that the registration number of the sold moped is no longer in his or her name. The seller is then no longer liable for the obligations of the licence plate holder.

What does it cost to register a moped?

In 2024, transferring a license plate costs €12.50. You pay this cost on the spot when you transfer the moped.

Step-by-step plan for transferring a moped

When transferring a moped, you can follow the following steps:

  1. Ask the seller of the moped for the necessary documents
  2. Bring these documents, along with a valid ID, with you to the venue
  3. Pay the transfer fee of €12.50
  4. The employee will then transfer the vehicle to your name. You will then receive a registration report. This is written proof of the transaction.
  5. You will also receive the clearance certificate. You give the clearance certificate to the seller.
  6. From that moment on, you are liable for the obligations of a licence plate holder. For example, you have to take out moped insurance. You are legally obliged to take out at least a third-party insurance for your moped.
  7. You will receive the new registration card from RDW the same working day (if the registration was transferred before 16.00) or the next working day.
