How can I get car insurance abroad?

Is my car insurance valid abroad?
Are you taking your car on holiday abroad? Then your car insurance will provide coverage in many countries in the EU. In which countries you have coverage is mentioned on your green card. Before you leave, check what you are and are not insured for abroad and what requirements apply in the countries you are driving through. In most countries you do not need to carry your green card, but in some countries it is compulsory. On the green card you will also find an international phone number where you can get support after an accident.
Temporary car insurance abroad
Are you going abroad temporarily with your own car, for example, for your work? In many cases, you can keep your Dutch car insurance. Please check with your insurer in advance which conditions apply. Often there is a maximum duration of stay. For example, many insurers do not cover you when your car is abroad for more than half of the year. You can only get a Dutch car insurance for a car with a Dutch license plate. It is not possible to take out a car insurance in the Netherlands for a car with a foreign license plate.
Car insurance when you permanently live abroad
Are you permanently moving abroad? Then you cannot get a Dutch car insurance. To get car insurance you have to be registered in the Netherlands. When you deregister in The Netherlands and you emigrate to a foreign country, you have to end your car insurance.
