Why is there a car insurance for higher educated people?

Taking out car insurance is something that anyone can do. However, there may be differences in the amount of the premium. This is assessed from case to case. Do you have a lot of years without damage? Then your premium will be lower than someone who has recently caused an accident. It is also true that the premium for a car insurance for higher educated people can be lower. Why is this so? Isn't this discrimination? What is the difference with a normal car insurance? We are happy to inform you about these subjects.

Why car insurance for higher educated people?

It may sound strange that there are car insurances for the higher educated. Fortunately, insurers do not do this haphazardly: there is a good reason for it. Research conducted by various insurers has shown that higher educated people claim less often. This difference with other types of policyholders is so significant, that there is a special insurance for higher educated people. With an insurance for higher educated people, insurers therefore focus on a specific market, based on research.

What are higher educated people?

What exactly are higher educated people in the context of these insurances? Many insurers follow the same guidelines. As a rule, the following groups are considered to be higher educated:

  • People who have completed an education at a college (HBO).
  • People who have studied at the University (WO education, bachelor and master).

Some insurers also include people with an MBO level 4 education in the group of higher educated people.

Difference in premium compared to 'normal' car insurances

Research has shown that people with a higher education claim less damage. This is a reason for insurers to offer lower premiums to higher educated people. But what exactly is the difference in premium? Of course, this differs from case to case. It also differs per insurer. We therefore always advise to compare the premiums of such insurers with "normal" insurers.

An indication can be given in this context: a car insurance premium for those with higher education is usually between 3 and 8% lower.
This significant difference in premium is certainly worthwhile for higher educated people to investigate. After all, it would be a shame if this "premium lowering" circumstance is not taken advantage of.

Isn't a car insurance for higher educated people discrimination?

Car insurance for the higher educated... It may sound like discrimination. Why would an insurer create inequality in this way? In this context, it is good to realise that this term should not be taken too literally. So why not? Taking out insurance comes down to covering a risk. A good insurer will preferably paint as complete a picture as possible of the 'situation to be covered'. An estimate is made for each individual case. The personal affairs of the (potential) policyholder are also taken into account. Not so strange in itself: an incorrect risk assessment can be very detrimental to the insurer. The circumstance that level of education can lead to a lower premium, is therefore only a given. It is only part of a much broader risk assessment. So there is no discrimination in car insurance for the higher educated. It is simply part of the way insurers work. Without this accurate working method, insurances in general would become a lot more expensive.
