What should I do if I want to extend the suspension of my car?

When you suspend your car, you choose a suspension period of 1,2 or 3 years. After the suspension period ends, the suspension expires automatically. If you are still not going to use the car after your chosen suspension period, you can also choose to extend the suspension. This way you avoid paying motor vehicle taxes, MOT fees and insurance premiums for a vehicle you are not going to use anyway. Extending a car suspension can be done at the RDW.

Extend car suspension online

  1. Go to 'Extending suspension of car' and log in with your DigiD
  2. Fill in the requested information and pay the costs with iDeal
  3. You will then receive an e-mail confirming the appointment. Only after receiving a second e-mail will the extension be effective. This e-mail will also contain the end date of the suspension.

Please keep the second e-mail. This is also your proof of renewal. You will not receive a new vehicle registration certificate after renewal. Your current registration certificate will remain valid.

Extending a suspension of a car at the counter

  1. Go to a registration desk, RDW desk or RDW testing station no later than the end date of the suspension.
  2. Bring the registration card and the registration code or the registration certificate and the transfer certificate. Do not forget a valid ID.
  3. Pay the costs at the counter
  4. After this the suspension is immediately extended. You will receive the suspension report from the employee with the new end date of the suspension.

Keep the certificate of suspension in a safe place. This is also your proof of renewal. Your vehicle registration certificate will remain valid. If you have a registration card, you will receive a new registration code. The first 4 digits of this code are on the suspension report and the last 5 digits will be sent to you by post in a letter from the RDW. Does your suspension end in the weekend? Then you must arrange the extension for that weekend or go to a vehicle registration desk that is open in the weekend.

Extending suspension: what does it cost?

When suspending a car, the RDW distinguishes between the normal rate and the low rate. This has to do with the age of your car. For extending suspensions, however, you always pay the low rate. In 2023, the following costs are charged when extending:

Duration of suspension/extension Cost in 2023
Extending suspension low rate RDW €26,50
Extend suspension low rate RDW for 2 years €53,00
Extend suspension low rate RDW for 3 years €79,50

I forgot to renew the suspension of my car. What do I do now?

According to the RDW, each year some 60,000 people forget that their suspension has expired. However, once a suspension has expired, you as the license plate holder must again immediately fulfill all vehicle obligations, such as the MOT obligation, the insurance obligation and paying motor vehicle taxes. If you forget this and your car is not insured, for example, you will receive a hefty fine. A shame! Therefore, the RDW sends a reminder about a month before the expiration of the suspension. You will receive this by mail or in your message box, depending on your stated preference. Did you forget to renew the suspension? Two weeks after the expiration date of the suspension, the RDW sends a warning letter that the vehicle is not insured. This gives you the chance to still extend the suspension or insure your car.
