How much discount do you get with claim-free years?

Claim-free years are years in which you do not claim a claim with your insurer. For every year that you do not claim, you get one claim-free year. The more claim-free years you have, the more discount you get on the premium of your car insurance.

This discount is also called no-claim discount. If you make a claim, you pay more premium. But how much no-claim discount do you get exactly? On Alpina.nl we explain how this works.

Claim-free years discount: table

Exactly how much discount you get varies by insurer. An insurer determines this on the basis of a bonus malus ladder. A bonus malus ladder is a table that insurers use to determine the no-claim discount of your car insurance. The discount you receive is determined by the number of no-claim years you have. The higher you are on the ladder, the more no-claim discount you will receive. Each insurer has its own bonus malus ladder.

All about getting a discount with your claim-free years

Can you also get a discount without claim-free years?

If you do not yet have any claim-free years, this does not mean that you will not receive a discount on your car insurance. It can differ from one insurer to another on which step of the bonus malus ladder you start. If you have no claim-free years yet, insurers often look at your age to classify you on the ladder. With many insurers you will start on step 6 or 7, depending on your age. This can vary per insurer, so always check the bonus malus ladder of your insurer in the policy conditions. Let's take the bonus malus table from above as an example. You have no claim-free years and the insurer places you on step 7, based on your age. This means that you will receive a 45% discount on the premium. If you do not make a claim with the insurer in the coming year, you move up to step 8 and the discount percentage goes up to 50%. If you do make a claim, you will drop to step 2 and receive only a 5% no-claim discount.

What is the maximum discount?

The more claim-free years you have, the higher the discount. The maximum discount can be as high as 80% on the basic premium. Since 2016, you can build up to 99 claim-free years with any insurer. Before, insurers could determine this themselves based on their bonus-malus table, but now this is the same with every insurer. If you have reached the top of the bonus-malus ladder, you have reached the maximum discount. Do you have more than 15 claim-free years? Then you will still fall back to 10 claim-free years with one claim.

Claim-free years transferable since 1-1-2022

Since Jan. 1, 2022, claim-free years are transferable in some situations. Upon death, for example, they can be transferred to the surviving partner. Also for lease drivers and drivers who have lived abroad for years, it is now possible to transfer claim-free years. This way they do not lose their accumulated claim-free years.
