How can I request Roy-data claim-free years?
As of 1 September 2007, insurance companies have switched to digitally storing the number of claim-free years that customers accumulate. Roy-Data is the name of a system for royalty data for the insurance market. All Royement data with an expiry date from 1 September 2007 onwards is included in the system. Everybody can use the Claim-free years registered in Roy-data.
Claim-free years and Roy-data
The system in which lapse data - such as the number of claim-free years - can be consulted has great advantages. For example, it is no longer necessary to hand over the paper statement of indemnity (bonus-malus statement) when changing to a new insurance company.
You or your intermediary cannot access the claim-free years yourself online or by phone. Only an insurance company has access to this database. If you want to know how many claim-free years you have in Roy-data, you can submit a request. You will then receive this information by mail.
What does this mean for car insurance
When taking out a car insurance policy, the company will check in the Roy-data system how many claim-free years you have accumulated. If the claim-free years have not yet been claimed by another company, they will be assigned to the new policy.
For motor insurance policies cancelled before 1 September 2007, an official cancellation statement is still in circulation. Such a statement is valid for one year. So until 1 September 2008 an original cancellation statement can be requested when taking out a new motor insurance policy. Royalties issued before 1 September 2007 are not yet registered in Roy-data.
In the meantime, a lot of companies have changed the validity of a cancellation statement to up to 3 years.
When cancelling a car insurance policy after 1 September 2007, the customer will now receive a cancellation form with the number of claim-free years. The company will pass on the number of claim-free years to the Roy-Data system. The insurance companies will no longer issue a paper statement. Only in case of emigration the company will issue a paper statement.
Claim-free years transferable since 1-1-2022
Since Jan. 1, 2022, claim-free years are transferable in some situations. Upon death, for example, they can be transferred to the surviving partner. Also for lease drivers and drivers who have lived abroad for years, it is now possible to transfer claim-free years. This way they do not lose their accumulated claim-free years.
