Can I apply for a green card online?
Nowadays, the green card is available digitally from virtually every insurer. Fewer and fewer insurers are sending the green card by mail; instead, they make sure you can download it digitally. You’ll receive the green card automatically after taking out car insurance. Your insurer or broker will let you know where you can download the green card. You can then print the green card yourself. In the Netherlands, you are not required to keep the Green Card in your car. However, if you drive abroad, some countries do require you to have it with you.
Does the green card have to be a physical document or card, or is a digital version also valid?
These days, the green card is less and less often a physical document or card. Since July 1, 2020, the green card no longer has to be printed on green paper; it may also be printed on white paper. So the green card is no longer green. It was also decided at that time that the green card may be shared electronically. As a result, more and more insurers are sending the green card digitally only. You can then print the document yourself. It does not have to be in color; a black-and-white copy is sufficient. Although it is not mandatory in the Netherlands to carry your green card with you in the car, it is recommended. This is because the green card also lists important phone numbers you’ll need in case of a breakdown or accident. You can also choose to save the digital green card on your phone, for example as a PDF file or a screenshot.
In many European countries, the original Green Pass is no longer required, and a digital Green Pass is also accepted. This applies to all EU countries, as well as Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.
Digital Green Card Not Accepted in All Countries
In some European countries , however, it is mandatory to carry an original Green Card with you. A digital Green Card is not accepted in these countries. This includes, for example, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran, Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Montenegro, Ukraine, Russia, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey, and Belarus. If you’re driving your car to or through any of these countries, you’ll need an original Green Card. In Bulgaria, an original Green Card isn’t required, but it is recommended.
Requesting a Green Card Online: How Does It Work?
Most insurers no longer send the green card by mail but instead send it digitally via email. You can then print and keep the green card yourself. It’s also often possible to download the card from your personal account on the insurer’s website. You’ll receive the green card automatically after taking out your auto insurance and every year thereafter, as long as the policy is renewed.
