With the green card you can show not only in the Netherlands that your car is insured. It is an international insurance certificate. Throughout Europe the green card has the same lay-out, so that it is easy to read for the foreign police as well. One of the most important data on the green card is the green card number. If you have a claim and need to fill in a claim form, you will need this number.
Do I have to carry my green card?
It is not a legal requirement these days to carry the green card with you at all times. However, it is required for non-registered vehicles such as tractors. However, it is recommended that you carry the green card with you at all times. Especially when going abroad. There are even countries where it is mandatory to have a physical green card with you. In the following countries, it is mandatory to have the green card with you and the green card must be printed on green paper:
Albania, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israel, Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Montenegro, Ukraine, Russia, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey and Belarus.
It contains a lot of useful information that can come in handy in case of an emergency or breakdown. Before the green card expires, you will receive a new one from the insurance company. To avoid being abroad and your green card has just expired, the green card is always valid 1 month longer than the insurance period.

Are you insured through Alpina? Then you can request a new green card online free of charge. Usually you will receive the green card by mail. You may also receive the green card by e-mail. There are even insurers that send the green card by both mail and e-mail. This depends on the insurance company where you took out your car insurance policy.
The green card can take two forms, namely a pass or a document. This differs per insurer. It is not only mandatory to have a green card for a car. Also for a scooter, motorbike or motor home you will receive a green card and you will need to carry a green card in the above mentioned countries.
When you go on holiday abroad with a caravan, you may need a second green card for your caravan. If your caravan is heavier than 750 kilograms, you are obliged to have a second green card in Germany, Spain and Poland.
