What is the Green Card number?
After taking out auto insurance, you’ll receive a green card from the insurer as soon as your application is approved. A green card is an internationally valid proof of insurance. Your green card number is listed on the card. You can find the number under item 4 on the Green Card. The number consists of three parts: your auto insurance policy number, the insurer’s code, and the code for the country where you live. Without the Green Card number, the processing of a claim is likely to be significantly delayed.
Where is the Green Card number located?
You can find the Green Card number under item 4 on the Green Card: “4. Country Code/Insurer Code/Number.” The number consists of three parts, namely:
- Your auto insurance policy number. This policy number is a unique code under which your auto insurance is registered with the insurer or broker.
- The insurer code. The insurer code consists of 3 digits
- The country code for the country where you live. If you live in the Netherlands, the country code is NL
When filling out a European accident report form, you must always include the Green Card number. If you fail to do so, the processing of the claim may be significantly delayed. The insurer uses the number to retrieve the correct information. In addition, the insurer specifies on the Green Card in which countries the auto insurance provides coverage. The Green Card also specifies the period of coverage and the vehicle to which the coverage applies. The insurer usually lists on the Green Card the agencies the insured can contact in the event of a breakdown, accident, broken window, or theft, both domestically and abroad.
Green Card number
Although the Green Card has not been mandatory in the Netherlands since 1972, it is still very useful because it contains all your insurance information in a concise and clear format. Besides, you never know when you might need your Green Card number. For this reason, it’s still a good idea to always carry your Green Card with you, especially when traveling abroad.
Border checks for the Green Card have been abolished in a large area. In most countries, however, you must be able to prove that your vehicle is insured during a traffic stop or in the event of an accident. In principle, you can do this by presenting the Green Card. Of course, your auto insurance must be valid. In the past, you were required to carry it with you when traveling abroad by car. This is no longer the case, but it is still advisable to bring the Green Card with you.
However, in the countries listed below, it is still mandatory to carry a green card, which must be printed on green paper:
Albania, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israel, Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Montenegro, Ukraine, Russia, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey, and Belarus.
