How can I extend the suspension of my car with the RDW?

If you do not use your car for a longer period of time, it is wise to suspend the car. This can save you a lot of money, because during this period, you do not have to pay any motor vehicle tax and you do not have to undergo the MOTand insurance. When you suspend the car, you can choose a period of 1, 2 or 3 years. Is the suspension period about to end and are you still not going to use your car? Then you can also extend the suspension of your car. You can do this at the RDW.

Extend suspension

When can I renew the suspension of my car?

The suspension can be extended at the latest by the end date of the suspension. Extending the suspension can be done from no later than 6 weeks before the end date of the suspension. The expiry date will then remain the same as the end date of the old suspension. If you extend the suspension before the maximum of 6 weeks (before the end date of the suspension), you will not keep the old expiry date. The new expiry date is the date the new suspension was extended plus 1, 2 or 3 years. You will receive a reminder from RDW 1 month before the suspension expires.

Extending suspension online

The easiest and fastest way is to extend the suspension online. You can do this 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you want to extend your suspension online, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to 'Extend car suspension' and log in with your DigiD
  2. Fill in the requested information and pay the costs with iDeal
  3. You will then receive an e-mail confirming the appointment. Only after receiving a second e-mail will the extension be effective. This e-mail will also contain the end date of the suspension.

Please keep the second e-mail. This is also your proof of renewal. You will not receive a new vehicle registration certificate after renewal. Your current registration certificate will remain valid.

Extending suspension at the counter

If you prefer to arrange the renewal at the counter, you can follow the next steps:

  1. Go to a registration desk, RDW desk or RDW testing station no later than the end date of the suspension.
  2. Bring the registration card and the registration code or the registration certificate and the transfer certificate. Do not forget a valid ID.
  3. Pay the costs at the counter
  4. After this the suspension is immediately extended. You will receive the suspension report from the employee with the new end date of the suspension.

Keep the certificate of suspension in a safe place. This is also your proof of renewal. Your vehicle registration certificate will remain valid. If you have a registration card, you will receive a new registration code. The first 4 digits of this code are on the suspension report and the last 5 digits will be sent to you by post in a letter from the RDW. Does your suspension end in the weekend? Then you must arrange the extension for that weekend or go to a vehicle registration desk that is open in the weekend.

What does it cost to extend a suspension?

When suspending a car, the RDW makes a distinction between the normal rate and the low rate. This has to do with the age of your car. However, you always pay the low rate for extending the suspension. In 2021, the following costs are charged for extending:
