The report code of a car

A car's report code is a unique 4-digit code. These are the last 4 digits of your car's chassis number. The insurer needs this code to register your car with the RDW. Without this code, you cannot get car insurance. So keep the code safe.

Your car's report code is the last 4 digits of the chassis number. For a motorcycle, scooter or quad, these are the last 4 digits of the frame number. The registration code belongs to the license plate. If you have car insurance car insurance, the insurer needs the report code.

To have your car registered as insured, you must provide both the report code and the license plate number to the insurance company at the same time. Without a report code, an insurer cannot activate car insurance.

When you take out or cancel car insurance, the insurer transmits the report code to the RDW. The RDW then checks whether the car is properly insured according to the rules in the Netherlands (at least a WA insurance).

The difference between reporting code and registration code

The reporting code and the registration code of the car are sometimes mixed up. Yet these 2 codes both serve different purposes.

The registration code is needed when transferring, suspending, scrapping, exporting or trading in the car. The registration code is needed when buying car insurance.
