Transferring a Car into Someone's Name
Have you bought a new car? If so, you’ll need to transfer the vehicle’s registration to your name. This is called a transfer of ownership. You’ll do this together with the seller. This can be done any day of the week. Is the registration in your name? If so, you must comply with all vehicle-related obligations: take out auto insurance, comply with the mandatory vehicle inspection (APK), and pay motor vehicle tax.
How does transferring car ownership work?
You can transfer ownership of a car through the RDW. You can choose whether to complete the transfer online or in person at one of their locations.
Here's what you'll need:
To transfer ownership of a car, you'll need a few documents:
- A complete vehicle registration certificate: the registration card and the registration code.
- Either the original certificate of registration (Part 1B) and the transfer certificate.
- A valid form of identification: driver's license, passport, or ID card.
After the transfer, you will receive a registration report showing the first 4 digits of the new registration code. You will also receive a certificate of release. Give this to the seller. This certificate proves that the seller is no longer responsible for the vehicle.
Has the car been transferred to your name? If so, you must comply with all vehicle regulations. The RDW checks the insurance registry to see if you have car insurance. They also check the inspection registry to see if the car has passed its APK inspection. The Tax and Customs Administration verifies whether the road tax for the car has been paid.
Costs for transferring ownership of a car
The fee for transferring ownership of a car is €13.10 in 2025. The fee is the same everywhere. So it doesn’t matter whether you choose to transfer ownership of the car online or prefer to do so at a vehicle registration office, an RDW location, or a PostNL location. The only difference is that when you transfer ownership of a car online, you pay the fee via iDEAL | Wero.
Transfer Car Ownership Online
You can transfer car ownership online through the RDW website. You’ll need to complete a one-time identity verification using your ID. You can do this with the DigiD app on your cell phone.
To transfer ownership of a car online, follow these steps:
- On the RDW website, select the“Transfer vehicleownership” option.
- Pay the transfer fees via iDEAL | Wero.
- After the transfer, you will receive two emails from the RDW. You will first receive a confirmation of receipt, followed by the final confirmation of the transfer. The car is not officially transferred until you receive the final confirmation via email.
- You will then receive a third email from the RDW containing a link to the certificate of release and the registration report. Give the certificate of release to the seller and keep the registration report for yourself. The registration report also includes Part 1 of the registration code.
- You will then receive the vehicle registration certificate and Part 2 of the registration code by mail.
Transferring car ownership at a vehicle registration office, RDW location, or PostNL location
Would you rather have your car registered in your name at a specific location? You can do that at various locations throughout the Netherlands. In that case, you don't need a DigiD.
-
- Go to a vehicle registration office, PostNL location, RDW inspection station, or RDW service counter near you
- Make sure you have the vehicle registration card and the registration code, or the original certificate of registration (Part 1B) and the transfer certificate with you. Also bring a valid form of identification.
- Pay the transfer fees.
- At the counter, the staff member will give you a registration report showing thefirst 4 digits of the registration codeand the certificate of indemnification. Give the certificate of indemnification to the seller and keep the registration report for yourself.
- You will then receive the vehicle registration certificate and Part 2 of the registration code by mail.
Who is allowed to transfer ownership of a car?
A car can be transferred to someone who is 18 years of age or older and has a valid Dutch identification document (passport, ID card, or driver’s license) and a residential address in the Netherlands. The buyer must be present in person at the time of the transfer or authorize someone else to act on their behalf with an RDW authorization.
Companies can transfer ownership of a car by providing an extract from the Chamber of Commerce and a valid ID for the person in charge.
Transferring Ownership of Your Car Over the Weekend
Did you buy a car over the weekend? Transferring ownership of a car on Saturday or Sunday is usually no problem. These days, there are more and more PostNL locations with an RDW partnership where you can go, such as in supermarkets or bookstores. These locations often have longer hours and are also open on weekends.
Please note that not all PostNL locations have an RDW service counter. Therefore, check online in advance to make sure the location you plan to visit actually handles vehicle registration transfers. This will help you avoid a wasted trip.
After the transfer, you will immediately receive digital copies of the certificate of discharge (for the seller) and the title transfer report (for the buyer).
Please note regarding weekend transfers
- Banks usually do not process payments on weekends. If you receive or pay money for a car, it may not show up until Monday.
- Some dealerships and auto repair shops are closed on weekends, so if you're buying or selling a car for business purposes, it's best to check in advance to make sure everything can be arranged.
Transferring Car Ownership After Death
If the car's owner dies, the license plate must be transferred to a new owner's name within 5 weeks. The process for transferring ownership of a car after a death is essentially the same as usual.
Taking Out Car Insurance After Transferring Ownership of a Car
As soon as the license plate is registered in your name, you must purchase auto insurance. In the Netherlands, you are legally required to have at least third-party liability insurance for your vehicle. This means you are insured for damage you cause to others. Damage to your own car is not covered. For this, you can opt for more comprehensive coverage, such as third-party liability plus limited comprehensive coverage or all-risk coverage.
Not having car insurance has serious consequences
If you forget to insure your car right away, you could face a hefty fine if you’re pulled over. The costs are even higher if you cause an accident while driving an uninsured car—especially if someone is injured or killed.
If you cause an accident, the costs for property damage can remain fairly limited. In the event of personal injury, however, the costs can run into the hundreds of thousands of euros. You could end up paying for the rest of your life if you don’t insure your car. So be sure to get insurance in time.
The registration code is listed on the registration report
To take out auto insurance, you’ll need the car’s registration code. This is a unique code consisting of the last 4 digits of your car’s chassis number. The registration code is listed on the registration report you received after transferring ownership of the car. It’s also listed on the registration card you receive from the RDW after the transfer of ownership.
Frequently Asked Questions About Transferring Car Ownership
Where can I have a car registered in my name?
The transfer of car ownership is handled through the RDW. You can choose whether to transfer ownership online or at a license plate office, RDW inspection station, RDW service counter, or PostNL location near you. You’ll often do this together with the seller of the car.
Why do I need to transfer ownership of a car?
You must transfer the title of a car to transfer legal ownership from the seller to the buyer. This is required so that you, as the new owner, become responsible for insurance, taxes, and any fines. Without a title transfer, the previous owner remains legally liable for the car.
I have lost my registration code, title code, or vehicle registration card
If you have lost your registration code, ownership certificate, or license plate card, you can apply for a replacement through the RDW. You can do this online using your DigiD or by mail. Please note that there is a fee for this service.
