Driver's license expired: will your car still be insured?

In the Netherlands, a driver's license is valid for ten years. As the expiration date approaches, you receive a warning from the government that you need to renew your driver's license. Unfortunately, people sometimes overlook this message or forget to renew it on time. But did you know that driving with an expired license can have major consequences?

If your driver's license has expired, you are no longer allowed to drive your vehicle on public roads. If you do, you risk a fine of 90 euros. If you drive for more than a year with an expired license, this fine can even reach 340 euros. The rule that you must take the driving test again if your license has expired for a longer period of time only applies if it has not been renewed since July 1985.

Many people know that they risk a fine when driving without a license, but do not know that there are other consequences. In the Netherlands, you are required to have at least a Wettelijke-Aansprakelijkheidsverzekering (third-party liability insurance) for every vehicle with a license plate. If your driver's license is expired, you are no longer insured when you cause an accident. You will have to pay for the damage to the vehicle and possibly to another vehicle yourself. This can already add up to a substantial amount, but imagine if someone becomes disabled because of your actions. You will have to pay hefty damages for this, which can amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars if someone becomes disabled, for example.
