What is the cancellation period for car insurance?

When you take out a car insurance policy, both you and the insurer sign a contract with rights and obligations that both parties have to comply with. When you want to cancel your car insurance, it is of course possible, but not at any given moment. Often this is only possible on a fixed date. With many insurers, cancelling a car insurance is only possible a year after you have taken out the car insurance. Usually you have to inform the insurer before that date that you want to cancel the car insurance. This period is called the cancellation period.

Many insurers used to apply a notice period of 2 months. Since 1 January 2010 this is no longer allowed. In general, insurances can be cancelled on a daily basis after the first 12 months, with a cancellation period of 1 month. There are even insurers who do not use a term of notice, but where the insurance can be cancelled daily.

In addition to the possibility of cancelling insurance on the contract expiry date, there are two other times when you can cancel a car insurance policy, namely:

  • In the event of changes to the terms and conditions or an increase in premiums
  • When selling the car

In the event of changes in terms and conditions or premium increases, you have 30 days to cancel your policy. Your policy can be terminated free of charge as of the contract expiration date or with one month's notice with cancellation fees.
If the premium increase is due to a claim or change this does not apply. It must be an increase or change that applies to everyone who has taken out the same insurance with this insurer.

In addition, when selling the car, you can cancel the car insurance (prematurely). You have to inform your intermediary or insurer of the date of indemnification. The policy is then terminated on the date stated on the indemnification certificate. You must be able to submit a copy of the indemnification certificate as proof of the sale. If you have bought a new car, you can also make a change to your current policy. This way you will keep your current policy and you will not have to cancel it.

Suspending car insurance

As long as the car is in your name, it should be insured. In addition to canceling the car insurance, you can also choose to suspend the car insurance. In this case, the insurance is temporarily discontinued. You can suspend car insurance immediately. You then do not have to deal with a certain term.
As soon as you have a car in your name again, you can reactivate the insurance.

Suspending a car insurance instead of terminating it, is especially a good option if you have accumulated negative claim-free years in the current insurance. Negative claim-free years are accumulated by claiming for damages. When terminating an insurance policy, you may encounter the problem that you cannot take out a new policy. This can be due to a bad claims history or because you have a criminal record.
