Can I insure a caravan for its current value?
If you cause damage to another person with your caravan, it is covered by your WA car insurance (when you are towing the caravan with the car). However, damage to your own caravan is not covered by your car insurance. Also for damage by for example fire, storm or hail you have to take a caravan insurance.
For a new caravan (up to about 5 years old), you can purchase caravan insurance with new value coverage. Is your caravan a little older? Then you can also insure the caravan at the daily value. On Alpina.nl we are happy to explain what that means.
What is the daily value?
The current value is the amount your caravan is worth at the time the value is determined. The amount is based on several factors, which we will go into later. If you insure your caravan for the current value, the insurer will base the payment on the current value in the event of damage due to fire or theft, for example. If you have damage to your caravan, and it costs more to repair it than it is worth at that time, we call it a total loss. Even if your caravan is a total loss, you will be reimbursed for the current market value. A caravan insurance with current value coverage is recommended for somewhat older caravans (about five to fifteen years old). For new caravans (less than 5 years old) we recommend new value coverage.
How is the current value of my caravan determined?
The most important factors in determining the current value are the catalogue value and the age of the caravan. The use and maintenance of the caravan also play an important role, although these are difficult to measure. There are a number of calculation tools on the internet that could be used to determine the current value of your caravan, but these do not take into account maintenance and use and are therefore not accurate. To get an idea of the current value of your caravan, look at used car sites where similar caravans are on offer.
