Frequently asked questions car insurance
Which form of insurance is best to choose?
The best coverage for your car depends on the age, value and condition of your car.
- Third-party insurance
This is the minimum, legally required coverage. Only damage you cause to others is reimbursed. Usually suitable for older cars (from about 10 years) whose daily value is low. - WA limited casco
Provides additional coverage for damage caused by fire, storm, windshield breakage, lightning or animal collision, for example. This coverage is often appropriate for cars 6 to 10 years old. - All risk (WA full casco)
The most comprehensive insurance: in addition to the damages mentioned above, you are also insured for your own damages due to collision or vandalism. Usually chosen for newer cars up to about 6 years old or with a high daily value.
If you already have several claim-free years, you will benefit from a discount on your premium. This can make it attractive to opt for more extensive coverage, such as limited liability or all-risk, without the premium being much higher.
Can you get car insurance without a driver's license?
It is possible to get car insurance without a driver's license, although not every insurer accepts this. Still, as a license holder, you are required by law to insure the car, even if you (temporarily) do not have a driver's license. Insurers with a broader underwriting policy, such as De Vereende, often do offer options to take out car insurance without a driving license. This sometimes involves additional conditions, such as a higher premium or a prepayment or deposit. Driving yourself without a license is not allowed: any damage caused will not be compensated.
When am I required to insure my car?
You are required by law to take out at least third-party liability (TPL) insurance as soon as the car's registration number is put in your name. From that moment on, you are registered as the owner with the National Road Transport Office ( RDW).
Even if the car is still with the seller, but already registered in your name, it must be insured immediately. Only with third-party insurance do you meet the legal obligation. More extensive coverage, such as limited liability or all-risk, is not mandatory but can provide additional security.
What is a registration code?
A registration code is a unique 9-digit code you need to register a vehicle in your name with the RDW. Do you want to put a car, motorcycle or other vehicle in your name? Then you need this code. You also use the code if you sell, scrap, suspend, trade in or export a vehicle.
How does claim-free years accrual work?
For every year that you do not report a claim, you get 1 claim-free year. You then move up one step on the bonus-malus ladder, which means that you receive an increased discount on your premium. After 15 claim-free years, the discount can reach 80%. If you claim damage, you usually go down 5 steps. As a result, your premium may increase substantially or you may even receive a surcharge if you have negative claim-free years.
