Why does an insurer distinguish between daily and recreational use?
When most people think of a motorhome, they immediately think of recreational use. After all, it’s the perfect vacation vehicle. Sometimes, however, a motorhome is also used on a daily basis—for example, for commuting to work. Insurance companies do make a distinction here, since the risk of damage is greater with daily use than with recreational use. You also can’t get coverage from every insurer if you use your motorhome daily. At Alpina.nl, we explain why insurers distinguish between daily and recreational use of a motorhome and where you can best purchase your motorhome insurance.

Higher premium for daily use
The more often you use a vehicle, the greater the risk of damage. That’s why insurers often charge a higher premium for daily use of a motorhome. There are also some insurers that only insure motorhomes for recreational use. When you take out the insurance, you’ll specify how you’ll be using the motorhome—daily or for recreational purposes only. Recreational use means that you use the RV for vacations, weekend getaways, or day trips. When taking out the policy, you’ll also indicate whether you have a primary vehicle for daily use. If you don’t have a primary vehicle, the insurer considers it more likely that the RV will also be used for commuting, for example.
Some insurers do not charge a higher premium or impose additional conditions when insuring a motorhome for daily use. You can find the insurers that offer this coverage by comparing motorhome insurance policies.
How does an insurer determine whether a motorhome is used for daily or recreational purposes?
It’s quite difficult for an insurer to verify whether a motorhome is used solely for recreational purposes or also on a daily basis. Because of this, it might be tempting to use your motorhome on a daily basis even though you haven’t disclosed this to the insurer and therefore aren’t paying for that coverage. If the policy terms of your motorhome insurance state that you aren’t covered for daily use, you’re committing a criminal offense if you do so anyway. You are essentially committing fraud. This means that in the event of a claim, the insurer may refuse to pay for the damage. The insurer may also cancel your RV insurance policy. So always check the policy terms and conditions carefully to see how you are covered for daily use.
