Vintage car insurance is often more economical than regular car insurance. This is not because vintage cars are safer, but because owners usually treat their classic car with extra care and usually only use it recreationally. In addition, a maximum number of miles may be driven each year.

Is vintage car insurance right for me?

Vintage car insurance is only available to a limited group of motorists. Do you want to insure your vintage car inexpensively? Then a number of conditions apply. For example, the oldtimer may only be used as a hobby. In addition, in addition to the oldtimer there must be another car that is used for daily traffic. This can be your own car, but also a lease car or a company car. Furthermore, insurers often apply a maximum number of kilometers per year, usually 5,000 or 7,500 kilometers.

At Alpina, you can insure your vintage car as soon as the car is 25 years old or older. In some cases, this is even possible from the age of 10, depending on the make and type. Alpina offers more options than many other insurers, who often apply a higher age limit. Other parties also look at whether the make or type appears on the list of Invaluable Classics, or whether an official club exists for it. The measure may also be whether the model is still in production. It is easy to calculate the premium for vintage car insurance.

Are you eligible for low-cost insurance? Then you'll enjoy the benefits below!

  • Oldtimer acceptance as early as 25 years of age
  • Premium payment possible per month
  • Premium starting at €6 per month!
  • Use 5000 and 7500 kilometers per year possible
  • Insurance based on a valuation report is possible

Do you drive more or do you use the vintage car for daily use? Then you can choose regular car insurance instead of oldtimer insurance.

Other insurance policies for vintage cars

Alpina also has classic car insurance for, in addition to cheap passenger car insurance:

Camper vintage car insurance
Vintage truck insurance
Vintage moped insurance

Possible coverages in vintage car insurance

Civil liability (WA)

Third-party insurance is the basic coverage and cheapest old-timer insurance. It covers the damage you cause with the car to third parties, but not the damage to your own car.

Limited casco (WA plus or WA+)

In addition to the third-party insurance, damage to your own oldtimer is now also covered in the event of fire, theft, storm and broken windows, among other things. Damage to your own oldtimer that you have caused yourself (for example by a collision) is not compensated on this oldtimer insurance.

Full hull (all-risk)

This is the most comprehensive coverage for vintage car insurance. Everything covered under limited hull is covered, but now all damage to your own vintage car is also covered.

Do you have a vintage car with a high value? Then it is wise to choose at least WA limited casco or all-risk. This often requires an appraisal report so that the value of the car is clearly established and there is no discussion in case of damage.

Compare vintage car insurance

Comparing vintage car insurance is important. A number of factors play a major role in determining the premium; the so-called premium determining factors. Insurers let the premium depend on:

  1. The year of construction of the vintage car
  2. The value of the car
  3. The love of the regular driver
  4. The use of the vintage car: commuting, daily use or only hobby use
  5. How many miles per year the vintage car is driven
  6. Coverage. Third-party insurance is cheaper than All Risk coverage

No claim-free years with a vintage car

With most vintage car insurance policies, you do not accrue claim-free years. The premium remains a fixed low premium regardless of claims. This is possible because use is limited and strict conditions apply.

Tip: Have you had motorcycle insurance in the past and accumulated claim-free years? Then you can often take those with you for vintage car insurance and benefit from additional discounts on the premium.

Road tax on vintage cars

What exactly is the oldtimer road tax? When is a car a vintage car and when do you no longer have to pay road tax for a vintage car?

Stall clause/night clause

If your insurance includes a storage clause , the vintage car must be stored in an enclosed area between sunset and sunrise. This is not a carport with a fence in front of it or a parking garage that is accessible to several people.

A variation of this clause is that the storage requirement applies only when the vintage car is within a 1-kilometer radius of the home.

Stowage clause varies by company

Not every insurer sets a standard stowage clause. This varies by product, type and value of the vehicle. Therefore, when taking out insurance, always ask if a stowage clause applies.

Saving on vintage car insurance

Saving money is good, of course, but do it the right way. You don't save money by settling for third-party or limited liability insurance. That is saving by compromising on the quality of the insurance. A better way is to compare the various insurers and choose the classic car insurance at the most competitive premium. Saving on the quality you will regret in case of damage.

Example

Your vintage car has a value of €25,000. You can choose for the all risk oldtimer insurance with a premium of €44 per month. Per month you can save more than €30 by not insuring your oldtimer all risk but WA. The annual savings amount to €360.

Suppose, due to a steering error, you cause a collision. The damage to your car amounts to €7,500. This damage will not be paid with the third-party insurance, but with the all-risk old-timer insurance. In this example, which insurance you choose is not a difficult decision.

Additional coverages

Carrying passengers also comes with a responsibility. In case of an accident, you feel responsible for material damage, but especially if the passengers suffer personal injury. You can cover this risk with one of the following two additional insurances:

  • Accidental occupant insurance
  • Indemnity insurance

Participating in traffic can also present legal issues. Choosing legal assistance insurance puts you in a stronger position. This insurance helps you recover damages from the other party, but it also allows you to hold a car dealer or the road authority liable.

Accidental occupant insurance

An accident can cause serious bodily injury to passengers. An accident can even result in death. With insurance, you cannot prevent the suffering, but you can limit the financial suffering.

Accidental occupant insurance pays an amount in the event of permanent disability or death of one or more of the passengers. A benefit of €5,000 follows death and €15,000 follows permanent disability.

It does not matter for the benefit who is found responsible for the loss. Benefits also follow for the driver. Even if the accident is the fault of the driver himself.

Indemnity insurance

Passenger indemnity insurance also pays out in the event of an accidental injury to the passengers or driver. The big difference is that it is not limited to a one-time payout, and a payout does not follow only in case of injury. Passenger indemnity insurance also pays out for property damage from the accident.

For example, possessions in a passenger's bag that are damaged. More important is the much broader coverage for injuries. In case of permanent disability, the insurer pays the actual financial loss. This can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars if the victim can no longer work.

Legal Aid

In traffic, it's easy to get into a legal dispute. In some cases, the insurer behind the classic car insurance will cover these costs, but not always. Legal expenses insurance also provides coverage if you have a dispute with your garage company over a repair.

Event regulation for vintage cars

Do you have an old-timer of 15 years and older, a so-called youngtimer, whose registration has been suspended? Then in certain cases you can still temporarily on the road without lifting the suspension. This is possible with the so-called event regulation. This arrangement is intended for recognized classic car events, such as commemorations, (flower) parades or club days. You may only make limited use of your oldtimer and must meet the conditions.

Conditions of event regulation

  • The event must be registered by the organizer with the Tax Office.
  • You may participate in a maximum of 4 events per calendar year.
  • You may use up to a total of 6 to 8 days per calendar year (varies by explanation from the Internal Revenue Service). The drive to and from the event also counts as a day of use.
  • Your vintage car must be insured.
  • You may use the car only in connection with the event.

Please note that it does not apply to private occasions, such as a wedding or anniversary.

Use when purchased during the year

Are you buying a vintage car during the year? Then you must take into account the number of days and events already used by the previous owner. For example, has the previous owner already used 2 days? Then only the number of days remaining is left for you.

Types of events

It applies to special occasions when vintage cars are displayed to the public, such as:

  • Commemorations
  • (Flower) parades
  • Club days of vintage car clubs

Insurance during events

Even if your vintage car's license plate is suspended, the car must be insured while participating in an event.

Have you also suspended the insurance yourself? Then you need to activate it temporarily. Keep in mind that the insurer may charge policy fees for this and that you have to suspend the insurance again after it expires.

An MOT inspection is not mandatory, but the car must be MOT-worthy.

Register as a participant

When an organizer announces that an event is subject to the event regulations, register your vintage car with the organizer in a timely manner. During the event you do not need to have a separate proof of participation in the car.

Are you ultimately not going to the event? Then the organizer must deregister your car with the Tax Office no later than 1 business day before the event. Otherwise, the day still counts toward your annual maximum.

Register as an organizer

Organizers must register their event with the Tax Office no later than 2 months in advance. They will receive written notification whether participants can use the scheme.

In addition, the organizer must send a list of suspended vehicles to the Tax Office no later than 1 business day before the event. No separate confirmation follows for this.

The request should be sent by mail to:

Frequently asked questions about vintage car insurance

How can I calculate the premium for vintage car insurance?

Calculating your insurance is done in 4 simple steps:

  1. Enter your license plate number and personal information
  2. Choose your desired coverage: WA, WA limited casco or All-risk
  3. Information on the use of the car and the driver
  4. Calculating the premium succeeded

Once you have completed the 4 steps, you can immediately take out insurance for your vintage car. If you don't want to make a decision yet, you can also request a quote or record the calculation.

When do you no longer have to pay road tax on a vintage car?

Road tax is basically mandatory for all motor vehicles. However, an exemption applies to motor vehicles that were put into service at least 40 years ago. In some cases, you then pay no or less motor vehicle tax. For buses and trucks, this exemption only applies if you do not use them commercially. Read more about oldtimer road tax.

When is a car a vintage car?

This varies by insurer. Often the car must be 20 or 25 years old, no longer in production, and used exclusively for hobby purposes. With Alpina, there are sometimes options as young as 10 years old.

Does classic car insurance also provide coverage during the winter months?

There are insurers who offer insurance with a so-called winter break. In this case, you are not allowed to drive the car during the winter months. In exchange, you get a discount on the premium. Is there no winter break in the insurance? Then you have year-round coverage.

Does classic car insurance provide coverage for touring?

If you use the vintage car for speed races, then the vintage car is not insured. But where is the limit? You can participate in a tour without a competition element. In that case, it will usually not be a problem for the vintage car insurance. Also, if the competition element is in the beauty of the car, the insurer will not make it difficult. To avoid later discussion, it is better to contact the insurer before participating in a tour. With the permission of the insurer, you can be sure that the insurer will not be difficult in case of damage.

Does vintage car insurance provide coverage for commuting?

Some insurers explicitly exclude using the vintage car for commuting. Other insurers have not literally included this in the terms and conditions, but do state that you may drive a maximum of 5,000 or 8,000 kilometers per year with the car. Therefore, if it is not literally excluded in the policy terms and conditions, the vintage car insurance simply provides coverage.

How do I determine the value of my vintage car?

For car insurance, insurers assume the catalog value of the car. This is the value of the vehicle at the time it leaves the factory. This value is of no use to you for vintage car insurance. Instead, what matters is the current value of the car. This is determined by an appraiser.

This is because it takes expertise to be able to estimate the value. The advantage is that in case of damage there is no discussion about the value that is assumed. It remains a snapshot. Therefore, after a number of years the insurance company will ask for a new appraisal.

Is all-risk vintage car insurance the best choice for me?

A treasured vintage car that you have invested a lot of time and money in naturally wants to be insured as well as possible. The all-risk vintage car insurance is the most comprehensive insurance. Even in the event of an accident caused by you, the insurer will pay out the other party's damages and yours. Compare several insurers for the best and cheapest old-timer insurance.

All-risk insurance pays damages if, for example, your car is damaged in an accident, vandalism or broken windows. But there is also a payment in case of theft and damage by an unknown perpetrator. This insurance is also known as WA-cascoof All Risk.
