7 reasons why switching car insurance can be smart
There are plenty of reasons to change car insurance . The most important reason for most people is a cheaper premium. Maybe another insurer offers the same coverage for less money, or your current insurance no longer fits because your car is old and you have different needs.
Switching can be smart in these situations:
1
Lower premium
Insurers charge different rates. By switching you can often save tens of euros per month.
2
Better coverage
A new insurer may offer better conditions or extras such as replacement transport or roadside assistance.
3
Make better use of your claim-free years
Some insurers calculate with a different bonus-malus table, which means that your claim-free years will give you a greater discount.
4
Situations change
Have you moved, are you driving fewer kilometers or have you bought a different car? Moving to a different region or a different car model can make car insurance more expensive or cheaper.
5
Additional options or packages
New insurers sometimes offer additional coverage that your current one does not have, such as coverage for accessories or legal assistance.
6
Faster claims handling
Not satisfied with the service in case of damage? Then switching to a more customer-friendly insurer can prevent a lot of frustration.
7
Haven't compared car insurance in a long time
If you have had the same insurance for years, you are probably paying more than necessary. The market changes quickly, so comparing almost always pays off.
Which insurance suits you best?
Switching after a premium increase
If your insurer decides to increase the premium generally, you can switch car insurance or terminate the insurance. This is allowed from the date on which the increase takes effect. You usually have to report this to the insurer within 30 days after the effective date of the increase.
The price of car insurance can increase at different times, depending on the insurer. This often happens at the end of the insurance year when the contract is renewed.
Switching after a change in policy conditions
If your insurer changes the rules of your car insurance, you may cancel the insurance and choose another provider. This applies, for example, if the coverage changes, the conditions become stricter or new things are no longer insured.
It is wise to always check if the new rules still suit you when the policy conditions change. Do you disagree with the changes, or do you find an insurance with better conditions somewhere else? Then this is the right time to switch.
The insurer will usually inform you in advance in writing of the changes and when they will take effect. From that moment on, you usually have 30 days to cancel your insurance free of charge. You do not have to wait until the end of the contract year for this.
Switching after damage
If you file a claim, you lose 5 claim-free years and receive less premium discount, which increases your monthly premium. That is why it is often more advantageous to switch car insurance to save money, or the policy conditions of another insurer are better suited to what you are looking for.
Please take into account the notice period of your current car insurance . In the event of a premium increase due to damage, you cannot cancel immediately without notice, as you can with a general premium increase.
Switching after negative claim-free years
Are you filing a claim? Then you lose 5 claim-free years. Do you have less than 0 claim-free years as a result? Then you get a malus registration ( negative claim-free years ). With a malus registration, it is usually not wise to switch to another car insurance.
If you have negative claim-free years, the chance that you will find a cheaper insurance than you have now is small. Also, few insurers will accept an application if you have a malus registration. That is why it is often smarter to stay with your current insurer or broker. Switching car insurance is then usually more expensive.
This is how switching car insurance works
To make switching car insurance even easier, we have drawn up a simple step-by-step plan:
Step 1. Determine your desired coverage
Many new cars are fully comprehensively insured. Older cars usually have third-party liability or third-party limited casco insurance. Fully comprehensive insurance (also called third-party casco) is the most expensive, but also offers the most extensive coverage. With this, your insurer not only pays for the damage to the other party, but also for the damage to your own car. With third-party liability insurance, only the damage to the other party is reimbursed.
The WA limited casco insurance is somewhere in between. This insurance offers extra coverage, for example in the event of storm damage, theft or a collision with stray animals. In order to be able to compare properly, it is important to know what coverage you currently have and what premium you pay for it.
