Temporary car insurance for export cars

If you want to export a car abroad, you need an export license plate as well as insurance. A temporary car insurance is valid for 1 day or 14 days. After this period, the insurance automatically stops.

You can decide when the insurance starts, as long as it is within one month of your application. The insurance only applies to the specified license plate and cannot be extended.

Temporary car insurance is a third-party liability insurance

The temporary export insurance only covers damage you cause to others (legal liability). So if you damage someone else's car or belongings, it will be paid. Damage to your own car is not covered by this insurance.

International certificate of insurance with export insurance

When you take out the insurance, you will receive an international insurance certificate. This is the green card . You need this to be allowed to drive abroad.

You can cancel the temporary insurance until the green card becomes valid. Once the coverage has started, you can no longer cancel.

Temporary export insurance valid in Europe

A temporary car insurance is valid for 14 days. During this period you can drive the vehicle throughout Europe.

An export license plate

In addition to the export insurance, you also need an export license plate. This is a temporary license plate with which you can legally bring a Dutch vehicle abroad. The license plate is intended for vehicles that are removed from the Dutch license plate register of the RDW because they are going abroad.

An export license plate has white plates, instead of the usual yellow plate. You only get this if you officially deregister the vehicle for export.

Please note: with an export license plate you are no longer allowed to drive in the Netherlands. It is only intended to bring the vehicle abroad or use it there.

Applying for an export license plate at the RDW

You can apply for an export license plate at an RDW inspection station or a recognized export company. You usually cannot arrange this online. You have to physically come by with the vehicle.

Documents you need:

Valid identification (passport or ID card)

Registration card and registration code (or paper registration certificate)

Optional: MOT certificate (required for transit in other countries)

Costs of an export license plate

The costs are around €50 for the administrative processing at the RDW. In addition, there are costs for:

White export license plates:

about €20-30

Temporary third party liability insurance:

about €25-50 for 14 days

Valid MOT required for export

If you want to export a car and drive it on public roads, you need a valid MOT (General Periodic Inspection). The export license plate is valid for a maximum of 14 days, but if the MOT expires earlier, the license plate is only valid until that date.

Always check the MOT expiry date before arranging the export. If the MOT has expired, you are no longer allowed to drive yourself and the vehicle must be transported. Prevent problems by having a new MOT inspection done in time when the validity is about to expire.

Frequently asked questions about export insurance

How long am I insured when I take out temporary export insurance?

The term of a temporary export insurance is 14 days. After that, the coverage expires automatically.

What coverage do I have with temporary car insurance?

A third-party coverage applies to the temporary insurance. It is not possible to take out more extensive coverage. Therefore, the insurance does not cover damage to one's own vehicle.

How quickly does export insurance take effect?

An export insurance can often start immediately after application and payment. With many providers you can arrange this online and you will receive the insurance certificate and the green card immediately.

What happens if my export insurance expires during transport?

If the insurance expires while the vehicle is still in transit, you are no longer insured. This can lead to legal and financial risks. Therefore, make sure that the coverage covers the entire transport route, including any delays.

How do I cancel an export insurance policy?

An export insurance is usually a temporary policy and ends automatically after the agreed term. Early termination is usually not necessary, but in case of an incorrect term you can contact the insurer.
