Insure a single-day license plate with temporary car insurance
Are you buying a car abroad or do you have a conversion vehicle? Then it does not yet have a Dutch license plate. Without a Dutch license plate you cannot get car insurance. But without car insurance you are not allowed to drive the car on public roads. Your car must be inspected before you can get a license plate.
You can drive the car on a trailer to the inspection appointment, but of course it is easier if you can drive it. You are required by law to have at least third-party insurance on every vehicle when you go on public roads. Therefore, you can take out temporary third-party insurance for the one-day license plate.

Do you apply for insurance with an effective date in the future? Then coverage starts at 0:00 a.m. on the first day for which coverage is requested. Your payment must be in before the insurance company issues a certificate of insurance and green card.

You may apply for a one-day license plate if you have an appointment at an RDW inspection station.
Only on the day of the inspection is the one-day license plate valid.
The insurance is only valid in the Netherlands.
The temporary insurance is temporary third-party insurance. It is not possible to take out temporary limited-casco or all-risk car insurance.
One-day insurance can be renewed 1 time for a fee. The effective date may be in the future, but not more than 90 days.
Thus, the insurance applies only on the inspection day and is intended for driving to the RDW inspection.

A one-day license plate
The one-day license plate is a special license plate that is valid for one day only. You can use this license plate to drive an imported car to an RDW inspection station. This is also called "inspection-driving": you drive with the one-day license plate to the RDW inspection.
During this inspection, the RDW assesses whether the car is approved for admission on the Dutch road. Only when the car is approved can you get a regular Dutch license plate.
Applying for a one-day license plate
You can request the one-day license plate for free from the RDW while making your inspection appointment. You will need the car and must have the vehicle identification number (VIN) on hand when making an inspection appointment.
This application may take a few days. Once you receive the one-day license plate (black letters on a white plate), you must mount it on the car and drive to the inspection station with it.
Making a license plate yourself
You may also make the temporary license plate yourself. For example, you can use a piece of white cardboard, on which you put the license plate with an indelible black marker. One condition is that the license plates must remain legible even in bad weather.
Insuring your car after a one-day registration
After a successful inspection at the RDW, you will receive the final registration number for your converted or imported car. From then on, you are legally required to take out final car insurance before you can drive the vehicle on the road.
Once the car has been inspected and has a Dutch license plate, you can take outregular car insurance . You can choose from several car insurance policies, such as third-party insurance, limited casco or full casco, depending on your needs and the value or age of the car.

Apply for single day license plate insurance for Germany
At present, it is not possible to apply for one-day registration plate insurance for importing a car from Germany. In the Netherlands, it is not possible to take out regular car insurance as long as the car has not officially been imported.
You must first import the car to the Netherlands before you can get insurance here. In the Netherlands, it is not possible to insure a car with a foreign license plate.
A temporary solution, for example, is to arrange an export license plate. In any case, make sure the car is properly insured before it comes to the Netherlands.

Yes, you can cancel the insurance if you have chosen an effective date in the future. You can cancel the insurance up to 24 hours before the effective date.
