Temporary car insurance for export car
If you want to export a car abroad, you need insurance in addition to an export license plate. Temporary car insurance is valid for 1 day or 14 days. After this period, the insurance stops automatically.
You can decide when the insurance begins, as long as it is within one month of your application. The insurance is only valid for the specified license plate and cannot be renewed.
Temporary car insurance is third-party insurance
Temporary export insurance only pays for damage you cause to others (legal liability). So if you cause damage to someone else's car or belongings, it will be paid for. Damage to your own car is not covered by this insurance.
International certificate of insurance with export insurance
When you take out insurance, you will receive an international certificate of insurance. This is the green card. You need this to drive abroad.
You can cancel the temporary insurance until the green card becomes valid. Once coverage begins, you cannot cancel.
Temporary export insurance valid in Europe
Temporary car insurance is valid for 14 days. During this period, you may drive the vehicle throughout Europe.

An export license plate
In addition to export insurance, you also need an export license plate. This is a temporary license plate that allows you to legally take a Dutch vehicle abroad. The license plate is intended for vehicles that are removed from the RDW's Dutch registration register because they are going abroad.
An export license plate has white plates, instead of the regular yellow license plate. You only get this if you officially deregister the vehicle for export.
Please note that an export license plate does not allow you to drive in the Netherlands. It is only meant to take the vehicle abroad or use it there.
Applying for an export license plate at the RDW
Applying for an export license plate is done at an RDW inspection station or an approved export company. You usually can't arrange this online. You have to physically visit with the vehicle.
Documents you need:
Valid proof of identity (passport or ID card)
Registration card and registration code (or paper registration certificate)
Possibly: MOT certificate (required for transit in other countries)
Cost of an export license plate
The costs are around €50 for administrative processing at the RDW. In addition, there are costs for:
White export license plates:
about €20-30
Temporary third-party insurance:
about €25-50 for 14 days
Valid MOT required for export
If you want to export a car and drive it on public roads, you need a valid MOT (General Periodic Inspection). The export license plate is valid for up to 14 days, but if the MOT expires earlier, the license plate is only valid until that date.
Always check the MOT expiration date before arranging for export. If the MOT has expired, you are no longer allowed to drive it yourself and the vehicle must be transported. Avoid problems by getting a new MOT inspection in time when the validity is about to expire.

Frequently asked questions about export insurance
How long am I insured when I take out temporary export insurance?
The term of temporary export insurance is 14 days. After that, coverage expires automatically.
What coverage do I have with temporary car insurance?
A third-party coverage applies to the temporary insurance. It is not possible to take out more extensive coverage. Therefore, the insurance does not cover damage to one's own vehicle.
How soon does export insurance go into effect?
Export insurance can often take effect immediately after application and payment. With many providers, you can arrange it online and receive the insurance certificate and green card immediately.
What happens if my export insurance expires in transit?
If the insurance expires while the vehicle is still on the road, you are no longer insured. This can create legal and financial risks. Therefore, make sure the coverage covers the entire transportation route, including any delays.
How do I cancel export insurance again?
Export insurance is usually a temporary policy and ends automatically after the agreed term. Early termination is usually not necessary, but in case of an incorrect term, you can contact the insurer.
