Which motorcycle insurance is right for you?
Taking out motorcycle insurance is mandatory. But you may also choose one of the two other forms, as it also includes coverage against third-party liability (TPL). The third-party insurance never pays for damage to your motorcycle. The insurer only compensates damage caused to others. What you are legally liable for or what the driver of the motorcycle is legally liable for, the insurer pays out. In case of a motorcycle accident caused by you, your insurer will compensate the other party.
Opting for the more comprehensive WA limited casco
For a slightly higher premium, you can also opt for the more extensive WA limited casco. In addition to legal liability coverage, this insurance also provides coverage for one of the following causes of damage:
- Window breakage
Theft or attempted theft
Hail and storm damage
Fire and explosion
Collision with stray animals
Lightning damage
In the event of a payout due to one of these causes, the claim does not affect the number of claim-free years. A caused accident will cost you 5 claim-free years, but theft, for example, will not cost you any claim-free years.
Many claim-free years make the All Risk attractive
With claim-free years you build up a discount in motorcycle insurance. With several claim-free years, the most comprehensive insurance becomes cheaper. This can make it easier to choose the all risk instead of the more limited coverage. Even if your motorcycle has a comparatively low value, you still want the best possible coverage.
Motorcycle insurance for a vintage motorcycle
There is special vintage motorcycle insurance for a vintage motorcycle.
Is your motorcycle 20 years old or older? Does the motorcycle run no more than 7,500 kilometers annually? And do you have another motor vehicle for daily use? Then you qualify for oldtimer motorcycle insurance. The premium for such insurance is a lot lower. The cheapest oldtimer motorcycle insurance starts at 2 euros per month.
Getting motorcycle insurance as a novice driver
A motorcycle license consists of 3 different classes. Depending on your age and the class of motorcycle, you can get a license and ride a motorcycle. This mainly applies to young drivers, as they are not allowed to ride every class of motorcycle. The 3 different classes are:
- Light motorcycle, A1 driver's license;
- Medium motorcycle, A2 driver's license;
- Heavy motorcycle, driver's license A.
Driving license A allows you to ride all different motorcycles, but not vice versa. It is wise to check this first before purchasing motorcycle insurance. This is because the premium may be different for each class.
New value motor insurance policy
If you have bought a new motorcycle and you are going to take out motorcycle insurance, you can also choose the new value policy. With the new value policy, most insurers allow you to insure your motorcycle for the new value for 3 years.

Frequently asked questions about motorcycle insurance
What does motorcycle insurance cost?
When you want to purchase insurance, a number of factors play a role in determining your motorcycle insurance costs. These include your chosen coverage, age, claim-free years and zip code. Also, if you take out additional supplementary insurance, this will affect the amount of the insurance premium.
To find out what motorcycle insurance will cost you, we recommend using the calculation tool.
What are the theft requirements for a motorcycle?
Theft requirements for motorcycle insurance vary by insurance company. You can find the requirements in the policy conditions that apply to your motorcycle insurance. Theft requirements only apply to WA limited hull and WA all-risk coverage.
ART category 4 approved lock
All insurance companies require at least an ART category 4 approved lock as a minimum requirement.
What is winter break coverage?
Some insurance companies allow you to save on motorcycle insurance premiums by opting for winter break coverage. In this, damage caused by riding the motorcycle is not covered during the winter. Usually this is from December 15 to March 1. Damage caused by fire or theft from the garage is then covered.
Does your motorcycle stay indoors all winter? Then you can choose motorcycle insurance with winter stop coverage. If you ride your motorcycle all year, winter stop coverage is not useful. You can indicate in the quote if you wish to use this.

Is wearing motorcycle clothing mandatory?
There are a number of obligations for motorcycle insurance, but motorcycle clothing is not mandatory. The main function of motorcycle clothing is to protect the rider from injury from falling.
But the clothing is also made for comfort. This is because the wind does not get a hold of the material. As a result, the motorcycle clothing does not flap like a flag in the wind. The clothing also provides good visibility.
Compared to cars, motorcyclists are less visible to other work users. Motorcycle clothing also provides good ventilation.
A motorcycle slide can quickly cause serious injuries. Even at low speeds. With motorcycle clothing on, you are still likely to suffer injuries in the event of a major slip, but the consequences can be limited by proper clothing.
Is motorcycle insurance mandatory?
In the Netherlands, it is mandatory to insure any motor vehicle that goes on the road. Taking out motorcycle insurance is therefore mandatory. But why is that? An accident is in a small corner and this can cause eye or injury damage. These costs often add up quickly.
At least with insurance, you are covered for the damage you cause to another person. In fact, if another person causes damage to you, it is covered by the other party's insurance. Besides the mandatory nature of third-party insurance, having good insurance can give you a sense of peace of mind.
What are the consequences of riding without motorcycle insurance?
Once you register a license plate in your name, it is mandatory to have insurance. You are also in violation if you drive without motorcycle insurance. This can have major financial consequences. In addition to the police, the RDW can also impose a fine.
There are four major disadvantages to driving uninsured:
- The RDW can impose a fine of €400 (they can do this three times a year);
- You risk a €550 fine from the police upon arrest;
- Of all the damage you drive, the bill is yours;
- If you continue driving uninsured for too long, only expensive insurers will accept your application. Reason enough not to drive without insurance, but to find good insurance.
Can you insure a motorcycle insurance policy in someone else's name?
Many young people think about taking out motorcycle insurance in their parents' names. That may seem appealing, but it is a risky choice. If you take out insurance, then you must also be the one responsible. The license plate holder is always the person liable for insurance.
If you do not disclose who the actual, regular driver is, then you are committing insurance fraud. The consequences can be dire: the insurer can refuse to pay damages, and that can amount to tons.
Therefore, always be honest and transparent when taking out your insurance. This way you can avoid problems and be sure you are properly insured.
